Auto wah/Envelop filter

Post by lorez »

So as I've seen else "school me in" auto wah/envelop filters. The good, the bad and the Q ugly

The Doctor Q isn't a good autowah because it quacks too much, but with manipulation of the trimpot inside the real one (the nano version fucking sucks) you can get some GROOVY sounds. I use it with a delay right before it, and the repeats sort of slip down the Q like they're bouncing down the stairs... it sounds coo. I also use it for a half-cocked wah sound but this is pretty precarious to set on the dial, is pretty dependent on your pickups' output and amp settings and therefore a tad risky for live use.
Stock, I think it kinda sucks. Crack it open and mess with that trimpot. Way easier on the big-box version than the nano, but do-able on both. You can even use the bass filter after adjusting the trimpot... I adjust it TO the bass switch, as a guide.

The only other autowahs I used were on the XP-100 whammy/wah, which were fun.

I've heard great things about the Guyatone Wah rocker, Guthrie Govan uses one to great effect.

He talks about it first:

Me too, to the point where I'd suggest this if I'd actually tried one. I'm SURE they kick ass by now, haha.

I had a DrQ for a short while but i thought it sounded absolutely cak.
Didn't know there was trimpots to adjust though.

Exactly, before I adjusted the trimpot I was like "who the fuck would buy one of these?"
But I actually think it's amongst the best value in EHX pedals now. Things like the Small Clone or Stone cost a ton for a one-knob chorus/phaser, the Dr Q was like 40 bucks here when they had the big-box ones out.

Aye, i flipped my Doctor Q within days. The Q-Tron+ on the other hand was the business, it seemed to do everything you'd want a Filter to do and very well at that. There are various models of the Q-Tron now, this was the one i owned..

i've used this and it does the job well, you can get typical funk sounds, or cop some radiohead tonezzz

i LOVE the clips of this, you can get clones (meatwad) but they aren't cheap...

one thing i will say, because the effect is attack based, it has a bit of a learning curve to get different sounds.

the Q-tron+ is good too, but has a lot of features and can get confusing quickly.

I've been using a few things like this recently. The Q-tron reissue in the folded metal case sounds great- it's pretty warm sounding and soft-edged. Whereas the Subdecay Proteus is proper harsh in autowah mode, and the treble can poke your brain, but it can do loads of other cool stuff as well. A more expensive option (I built a clone) is the Mad Professor Snow White autowah - a brilliant effect. I've also got the LAL Rattle Crow on my board at the moment, which sounds like a horrible broken autowah.
