I am looking for small amp I can tote around. While the Mustang I or II is definitely on my list, I have noticed a number of Fender Blues Juniors on CL under $300. I am hoping I get a good bonus for Xmas so I might have enough for one of these. I played through one at church and really liked the tone and options. I also noticed the new Hot Rod III Blues Juniors had a number of mods (Sparkle mod, etc). Is there any particular model of Blues Junior you would recommend? Or any mods you think would really improve the performance? I play Rock/Blues/Alternative musical styles.
Thanks.

I would go for the mustang to be honest if you are looking for an easy portable amp (you already have the Marshall and the Fender bass amp right?) The benefit of the mustang is that it is a full on setup (tuner, effects, pedals ,etc) so if you are looking for a poetable and flexible amp, then I would keep with that. Plus, with the 15% off coupons out there right now, you can pick up a mustang 2 for about 170 shipped or a 1 for about $85 shipped. Thats just my opinion.
Now, if you had no low wattage tube amps (especially Fender style low wattage tube amps) that may change the equation a bit.
That said, the mustangs (or the vypyr like i bought) are amazing little portable setups that weigh almost nothing and sound pretty damned good.

I once had a Blues Junior, it sounded really good. One mod i'd do is change the speaker, I think I put either a Vintage 30 or another Celestion in mine and it sounded ace.

There are a couple of Mustang IIs on CL for $90 and $100. I liked the tone of the Mustang II over Mustang I. I love the tube tone over the Digital but the flexibility of the Mustang is undenyable. The Blues Junior is also 6lbs heavier that the Mustang II.
A lot of my choices will depend on what's available and how much I get for my bonus.

Bill Machrone is the undisputed Blues Junior master genius.

In those pages lies a wealth of great information. I've been a Blues Junior owner since around 2004 and have found him to be a great resource.
