Christmas came early this year. After completing my Jaguar SH project, I decided to trade it to Serfx.

Serfx sent me:(My first real Mustang guitar)

The stock 69 Neck pickup and the Lace Sensor in the bridge sound fantastic. I am already in love with this guitar both in sound and looks. Serfx included .12s, which is new to me since I usually have .11s on my guitars. The only thing I don't like are the knobs, so I will probably be dropping some Bronco Knobs on it tonight. I can't wait until I finish the Mullet-stang to see how they compare to each other. I will demo once I finish the Mullet-stang. Thanks again to Serfx for trading with me.

Does anyone have the official specs for this guitar? The neck said it was a MG69 and the serial number is P07716

My wife made me order a Couch Strap to go with it.

I tried out both Jaguar and Bronco knobs on The Mustang last night. I loved the look and feel of the Bronco knobs, but the pots are very stiff and slow turning. So I ended up going with the Jaguar Knobs because they are bigger and more rounded than the Mustang knobs and it was easier to spin with one finger than the Bronco knobs were. Jaguar knobs keep the stock look but more functional.

I will probably save the Bronco knobs for the Mullet-stang assuming the pots spin easier.

Not sure. I haven't opened it up yet. Serfx might know since he put it in. I might open it up to check the wiring later and then I check it out.

That's a pretty hot pickup, but it doesn't sound that hot to me. Of course, the 250k pots would limit it some. I love the sound and matches up well with the stock neck pickup.

I think the out of phase and in phase options are wired backwards as well.

Yeah I was going to say that Lace are non-standard designs so you can't apply your traditional ohm vs. loudness thinking to them.

Their lowest resistance pickups like the Gold sound louder than their ohm rating, and their highest resistance pickups like the Red sound quieter than their ohm rating. Instead of loudness, you get more midrange and compression as you go up the color scale. The Red is a little too brash for me personally. I prefer Blue in the bridge, but in a Mustang, I can imagine that the Red would be rather nice.

Thanks for explaining the colors. That makes sense. The Red in the bridge sounds great and I can't wait to demo it. My other Mustang project (Mullet-stang) has vintage/RI pups so I am looking forward to comparing/contrasting the sounds against one another. I believe the body on this Mustang is Basswood and the Mullet-stang is Ash with filler to repair the front so that will also be a cool comparison as well.

I am hoping that both Mustangs will sound unique enough to keep them both. The Comp-stang is more of the Rock guitar, while the Mullet-stang will be the cleaner, bright guitar.

bought mine brand spankin new from Musicians Friend in 2003 for $459!!

sure is.

Ive kept it in mint condition, looks the exact same as it did when i unboxed it
except for the hotrail i installed.

Oh, and by the way, great guitar. Pretty much that plus a matched headstock is a guitar I'm definitely looking at.

One of the things I love about the LPB Competition Mustangs is the blue stripe. Looks so much better than a white stripe on that guitar.

I think it's also interesting how our Mustangs have the stripes but without the Matching headstock because I thought in '69 they had the matching headstocks.

I think if I ever had a signature model guitar, it would probably have competition stripes on it.

Sweet. I know you will like it. The Strangle switch is great with the WRHB and out of phase was awesome. Please do an demo.

PurpleHaze, what is the neck profile on your comp. Mustang? Is it an A profile? My neck has a narrow nut and the profile is less wide and more deep. Feels very different from my other Mustang.

Are the pots really stiff on your Mustang? These pots are probably the stiffest, slowest turning pots I have on any of my guitars.

The neck profile is on the thin side. as far a stiff pots, mine seem to turn just fine.

Love the comp mustangs.

That strap looks awesome, and will make a great match for the mustang! I showed my girlfriend Couch's website the other day and dropped some hints for christmas presents for me. I showed her a bunch of different racer x style straps that I liked, as well as a wallet that they have that is made out of the same material that was on the car seats in the old 80's mercedes station wagon that my mom had when I was a kid. I like the look of their straps a lot, and have a feeling I might get addicted and want to own one to go with each of my guitars and basses.
