this is going to sound completely stupid but im obsessed with harvey danger right now. specifically the gutiar tone he gets in a song called woolly muffler.

i cant tell if its a guitar tuned low, a baratone, a bass played high or a combo of all three going on at once. listen to this shit. all the live versions on youtube are like 10 years later and the dude is just playing a ugly fucking les paul.

listen to this shit its fucking great.

Totally not stupid. That entire album is incredible and has great guitar and bass sounds all over it.

The third time through there at the beginning of "Woolly Muffler" definitely sounds like a bass's higher register to me.

My favorite song from that album, inspired by my all-time favorite film:

Fuck, I think I'll be listening to this album all day tomorrow.

IMO its a regular guitar and I don't think it's even tuned down... the first two times through the riff sound like just one guitar track, sounds like a Strat through a bass amp to me, obviously that's a wild stab in the dark but those two would get you real close. I'm sure you could do this with a Mustang thru your Mustang emulating the bassman thing, just dip the mids on the amp and turn your guitar's volume knob down a tiny bit and palm-mute clean. Bear in mind that being a studio recording they would've milked that thick chewy bassness for all they could, so it might not be as richly satisfying as on the record when you're sitting in the room with your amp.

edit- listening to more of the song it could very well be tuned down but I still say the thickness and deep sound comes from the amp and not the pitch, as it seems a D is the lowest he goes.
