Peavey Deuce thread

ITT I'm going to pretend that the diary thread doesn't exist, and the effects, amps & gear forum does exist.

heaviest amp i've ever had though.

How do you find the onboard distortion?
I got it for the Punk band so was'nt too fussed about
woman tone and whatnot, more reliability at gigs were it could get knocked about a bit. Cant be arsed with a 4x12 anymore but still wanted the volume.

There's overdrive on each channel.
The good channel, with more tone control has a sweet overdrive-to-almost fuzz sound. Much more tube sounding
the bad channel, has more of a distortion sound. much more solid state sounding
I like to blend the two, if i'm not using a pure clean sound. So, in a punk band, i'd use over drive for most everything, and then add the distortion for superfast leads (where mushyness comes in handy) or noise.

Gabe you need to dig further I'm sure fran mentioned somewhere certain pedals working better than others

Anyhoo, i think i got mine for 200$
The phaser doesn't work, but that's ok.
the reverb isn't fenderliscious, but i quite like it anyway
mine has black widow speakers which i don't think they all have and which makes it even heavier to lift.
I'll prolly get casters to help move it.
It really is a fun amp

Righty, my Line 6 Spider has started cutting out at gigs, paid gigs no less and i did'nt want to take the Orange TT due to all the beer flying around and people jumping around on stage knocking shit over. So i went on a hunt for something robust, reliable and loud.
Our singer offered me his HH IC100 2x12 combo but it needs a full service, then i saw the Peavey Deuce VT going locally for around the same price as the HH would have cost me to get in a reliable state.
My Deuce is a VT model, it has four 6L6 power valves and a solid state pre-amp section. Two channels and a built in Phaser (which is quite good). The speakers dont appear to be Black Widows, from reading up they were on the earlier models. Famous users include the Lynard Skynard band[/sloan].
I paid £60 for the Deuce but the Reverb is broke, no big deal for me. First impressions are its built to last (it has since the early 80s), its mental loud and as a blank canvas it has a good sound. I have'nt been able to tweak a decent distortion from it at home volume, as Gabe said its quite fuzzish, not compressed enough for Punk tonez in my opinion.
May be different at rehearsal volume but i'll probably use a pedal anyway.
At what i paid im well happy!

Not wishing to pour scorn on the Deuce, though: huge amount of amp for a tiny amount of money. I just had nothing to add to the discussion. It's interesting how cheap big combo amps are, mind: Princeton RIs are like hen's teeth, and you'd be lucky to snag one for much under £800, but a Twin RI just languished for quite some time at £425 over at MusicRadar; I was tempted myself...

Big combo's are fucking awesome. Still portable, still stupid loud... Eric Clapton once snorted Coke off a Marshall 2x12 as well so that should help me with my songwriting[/Dichtomy].
I think Twins are overated personally and the thought of a valve change makes me shit my pants. Get a Deuce Tim, cheap as chips, Twin-like without the aesthetic and blooooze tonez. All you need is a good pedal.
