I was considering buying, or assembling a warmoth Jagstang with some money from my birthday, and i was just wondering what you people's opinions were on them and what pickups you guys switched out and why. Plz help thanks.

There is mixed opinion about the JS, people generally either love them or hate them.
I've owned five of them and my thoughts are;

Pros
Great neck
Unique shape
H/S configuration

Cons
Inconsistent production
You usually have to upgrade the humbucker and pots/capacitor.

They were also the cheapest Offset Fender at one time, but not anymore.

I have a Duncan Custom in my JS, which is basically a good all-round humbucker.

I own one and am assembling one from Warmoth stuff. Okay, I hate Mustang bridges but that's a personal thing. The humbucker angle makes the pole pieces significantly skewed away from the low E. The one I am building is going to probably use a Schaller roller bridge from Stew Mac and I am having the humbucker cut straight. I also do not like the switch config and I am using a 3 way toggle and going to mount it out front on the pickguard like a Duo.

is it just that when you change teh pots the guitar sounds better

I've wanted one for a long time... I've played them before and I love them. It pisses me off so badly that a guy I know that doesn't play guitar has one in his closet collecting dust and he won't consider selling it. I've made him offers at above what they sell for used and he won't take it.

After mine is done I'll prob sell my orig.

Its been that long ago but if i remember rightly some had 250k pots which is'nt teh best for humbuckers. Some had the wrong value capacitor as well which arguably made the guitar sound more wooly/dull.
I had two original run that had an awful sound but a reissue was fine in stock form.

Muddy sound , bridge sounds muddy don´t matter what passive humbucker you put , unique way its sounds less muddy is active Pickup EMG
Live´s out of tune until you learn how propper invert strings of bridge and wrap hard up the bitch.
Tuner´s are a random luck , if you luck you get Gotoh´s , if you unluck like me you get Ping chinese crappo and are forced change the turner´s
stock nut become lose and killing sound , changed per an graphtech nut.
who was the retard who got idea put 250k pots on humbucker ? you have change pots to 500k , Alpha good brand , CTS the wholes is too small for put on, Capacitor .47 lulz , .47 is for single coils , they should put an .33 or .22

Bad production best jag-stang´s are first generation made in Alder , Premium grade maple at neck , second generation are made in basscrappo

If you're building your own, I'd change the following things about the guitar:

1. Don't angle the humbucker.

2. Use proper 500k pots.

3. Change the upper switches to do something cooler. My thought is that the left switch should be a coil selector (left coil, series, right coil), and the right switch should be a three-way pickup switch (bridge-middle-neck). I've been loving the left coil-series-right coil configuration a lot and I think it's the most versatile tonal variety for a bridge humbucker. You get a good funk tone with the right coil, a good twang tone with the left coil, and a good rock tone with the series. You can't lose. This way, you can continue to have three-way slide switches, which I've really come to love. It's the only switch I've ever used where even if I hit it, I don't knock it into another position, so fuck toggles.

I think if you could steal the electronics out of a Pawnshop Mustang it would be perfect for a Jag-stang. Good pickups, lots of options and you get the Mustang trem. If I can get the electronics I might try it out one day. Otherwise, some Lace Sensors in a more classic Mustang pickup configuration might be better.

I use the pickupselectors to split the humbucker. Back: humbucker, middle: off, front: single. In combination with the neckpickup i can use the humbucker as a singlecoil or as a humbucker in phase or out of phase. A lot of combinations. And i love the out of phase sounds!

I kept mine angled.
There was a theory some time ago the angled humbucker was the cause of the guitar having a dull sound, my JS is one of the brightest sounding guitars i own. I did use mahogany for the body at a Jaguar tremolo though which will make a difference.

Or a Lace Sensor Dually for the best of all worlds!

I don't like the Pawn Shop config, honestly. It looks way too busy and you can strum yourself into the bridge position, which I hate.

I personally find tone pots useless. I may enlarge the tone pot hole and put my toggle there on my jagstang build. That or use a smaller toggle.

That's actually a great idea.

Sure beats drilling the pickguard and routing to put the toggle out there like a Duo.

They look better upside-down.

Is there a reason why people are averse to using slide switches as pickup selectors? They're perfectly capable of being a standard 3-way switch.
