Hello Shortscale

Hi everyone,

Yet another new boy I'm afraid.

Here's a couple of (rubbish phone) pics of my first and only shortscale, a '78 Musicmaster. It arrived in rather poor playing order, but it's had a good setup and it's much better... I really like the neck on this model.

My other guitar (Gordon Smith GS-1) is black on black too, so I'm thinking of swapping the pickguard and maybe the pickup cover on the MM (GS don't stock/make replacements). What say ye, shortscale? I gather that red tort is immensely unpopular around these parts, but I was reading through a couple of posts on here about this guitar and this pic lead me to believe that it might just work.

In light of the complete dearth of bronco knobs I'll probably stick a couple of witch hats on there too.

I'm Mark by the way.

sweeeeet.

personally, i'd leave it as-is. but if you must change, red tort would work, but is not really attractive.

i for one, love black and tort, especially on jazzmasters. if that's what you want then go for it. black on black is classy though.

Welcome to the forum Mark.
You have two guitars there i am very fond of and its great to read a lot of people saying how good MM necks are lately. My 78 MM was black on black and although it looks great i think red tort on black is even better. :)

My 78 MM is black on black as well. And beat to hell. Love the finish on your neck

Welcome aboard. I am not usually a fan of Black on Black, but it works with the Musicmasters.

Did Fender make a tone of Musicmasters in 1978? It seems that every Musicmaster I see lately is from 1978.

Even mine.

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone! Anyone else find these surprisingly heavy or am I just a complete jessie? My GS is probably a bit lighter than average, so that'll serve as a good excuse I guess.

I've been wondering this. Maybe the fact that they have a unique pickguard shape (and so a unique pattern of screw holes) and no bridge route means that they have an unusually high 'survival rate' in their original state? That combined with the fact that they are, in relative terms at least, pretty recent... or maybe they did just bash out a load of them in '78.

Looks great!

Many 70s Fenders do have a reputation for heft.

Nice geet tho. I like black on black.

Yep, black and tort is hot... though personally I prefer brown tort to red, but red does work.

Welcome to the forum; it's a lovely Musicmaster :)

I've got so much love for Musicmasters at the moment. A friend of mine at university has one, and seeing it gives me SUPER GAS.
