I'm thinking about picking up a Squier standard series tele next week, the black and chrome one.

Anyone have experience with these? I've only tried the classic vibe and affinity ones so I have no idea what to expect.

What are some things I should extra pay attention to if I decide to go check it out?

I'd say most important things would be the action and the fret edges. Make sure the neck is to your liking. Other than that, just be sure the guitar feels good to play.

Why not a Classic Vibe
These are the best for the money!

So I've heard. But its also twice as much as I will be paying for this.

I play bass most of the time and just need a decent guitar for laying down song ideas at home.

....but the more fun the guitar is, the better the song

Of course it's up to you and your budget but the CV's are superb!

I had one of these, I really liked it but it had upgraded pickups so I don't know how it sounded stock.

standard series are hit and miss quality.

you have to play it before you buy it. put it in your hands.


i wouldn't ever order one because there are good ones that play great and bad ones that will shred your left hand to bits

Agreed with what rob said, some are great, some are crap. So it's definitely one you have to play for yourself, whereas the classic vibe series is something I would order from musician's friend without playing it first because every CV i've played has been great. And unless you're getting a good deal on a used standard squier, the CV is a much better value. The standard is $229 new, and the 50's CV is only $349. For only $120 more, you get a much much better guitar.

I'm in the opposite camp. I think the Standard series is fantastic and its best examples are preferable to CV for me. To me it all comes down to if you like gloss or satin, vintage or modern. If you need gloss or vintage like specs, go with CV. If not find a good Standard. I love the 22 fret neck and the AlNiCo pickups and the six saddle bridge.

For the record I think the 6 saddle bridge and modern specs feel at right at home on this guitar.
