Talking about parts and features of a guitar we go on about pups, finish, pots, trems, neck profile, fret size, basswood v's the world, tuners, switches, witch hats, string gauge, amber switch tips, gaffer tape, etc but how about fret inlays?
To be more precise, side inlays. I CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT THEM. My playing turns into a mess, i've never known this happen before and just realised how the side fret inlays are like a navigation system for me, especially stood up. The fretboard inlays make no difference, i've had guitars without any.

Anything you take for granted on a guitar?

I'm the same as you Fran - need those side markers, not bothered about fretboard inlays or not. The times I have played a righty guitar flipped I am instantly at a loss and it is alien - I inevitably end up sticking some stickers on it to mark the frets on the bottom side.

The neck pickup. I sold all my two pickup guitars recently and all I have is a Bridge hum on the Hondo thing I got from Cooter. I miss having a neck pickup for teh jangles.

The guitar neck...cause it's like you know, if you didn't have it, you pretty much couldn't play any guitar, so it's pretty easy to take for granted.

Tuning pegs - If there was no way to tune a guitar on the fly, you'd be stuck with whatever random tension you could pull the strings to and tie them to.

Nut- because without it the strings would rest on the first fret and just kind of slide about

Strings - without them it would be a percussive instrument pretty much exclusively

I'd say the tremolo. when I'm playing my esquire it feels so strange not having a trem arm to grab on to to get that "wiggle" on some songs. not having there makes me have to neck bend on chords which I don't like doing. seriously considering putting a bigsby or better yet a jag/jazz trem on it.

I have an old antares korean made acoustic guitar that i've had for 20 years. I've left that thing in the cold, dropped it and smashed it against so many things over the years... the wood has warped and it really just sounds great. I bought a real nice martin a few years ago and I still play my antares acoustic because some how after all these years it has developed a really rich and warm sound and IMO it sounds better than the martin.

I took that guitar for granted for a really long time.. I'm glad It'll never be worth anything so that I'm never tempted to sell it.

thanks guys i appreciate it it's funny you say that because tonight i'm still snowed it.. just in michigan now.. I posted a thread in the pub that we can use to catch up.. I don't want to derail all the threads in the guitar forum for the next few days.

As for this thread, for me it's less about the guitar and more about my passive reliance on the old blue desktop Tonelab. Sure, it's almost 10 years old and is tonally predictable every time I plug it in, but if I had to mic-up an amp every day I go to work I'd prolly never get anything done.
