Decent price for a '64 Jaguar?...

Post by Thomas »

Since I started using my A width Jaguar the '64 I put together isn't getting any action so I think I'm going to sell it on so I'm looking for some help with pricing it. The moolah from this will be funding my summer festival jaunt so I'm looking to get a good price but at the same time not take the piss.

the guitar is an OLD refin, silver covered with candy red just like the old days, pup are Seymour Duncan 1/4 Pounders and the electronics are a bit older the OG shielding is still in there too. ('62 I think). Neck is awesome, frets are in great shape, still has the OG nut etc. It also has the clay dots so prob one of the last pre CBS jobbies.

It started off like this:

Ended up like this:

Cheers :D

Really? For a refin with non-original pickups? In the middle of a recession?

I'm not trolling - that just seems like a lot, especially since Jaguars generally go for a lot less than Jazzmasters.

Talking of which, what's with the JM pickups in the 'before' shot? Doesn't look like the body's been routed for them....

I just picked them up the same day. The body doesn't have any extra routing. It was a photo for my double build thread at the time (Jazzmaster and Jaguar)

£900 maybe? I'm a bit out of touch with current jag prices, and will freely admit to plucking that from the air.

I'd say top mark would be around the grand mark because you're got non original pickups, but the refinish is lovely and I doubt would really affect the price.

My estimate probably was a bit high. Still, somebody had to start somewhere...

In the world of Blue Book values it definitely would affect the price, but on eBay it would be a case of whoever can piss the highest. Gotta love that auction fever!

I seriously doubt you'll find someone willing to shell out even a grand on Gumtree (could be wrong, though). SOS Readers' Ads might be worth a shot.

I reckon it would be worth a punt at an ebay auction starting at £800 for sure. A well timed auction on an appropriate Sunday probably right after payday in the next month or so with excellent photos in good light would probably get a good return.

I'm sure the condition of the guitar and pre-CBS nature would all be in it's favour.

My '66 is beat to shit but all original and probably worth nearly £2,000 now. Don't underestimate how much people love Jaguars these days.

Just start it at 99p and save yourself the fee. It'll definitely go past £800. there are plenty of people won here who'll see to that, I'm sure.

For the record a 10-day auction beginning on Thursday evening lets people find it over two weekends.

Dots and binding adds a bit to yours, Mike; that seems to command a slight premium. Blocks and binding seems to command a bit less (pre CBS mojo feathers decreased). I think the B&B neck and changed tuners are why I got mine for a reasonable price.

PRO TIP on the Thursday thing.

It's weird innit Stew, since B&B would have been my first choice after falling in lub with Hurbs. Not that I don't love my D&B neck to smithereens.

DFRNT STRKS. I prefer B&B too, some people turn their noses up because they associate it with CBS.

the demand for them is obviously increasing.... otherwise fender wouldn't be putting out so many variations in different price point these days... hard to tell what it's worth, you probably won't get a bid from someone with big money looking to get a vintage fender, but you might get a bite from a 20 something who wants vintage but can't shell out the cash for an all original.

Yeah about 8 at last count. Most live miles away tho and are selling gear themselves before they can buy. I don't drive so I'm not in the position of being able to do a halfway meetup either.

The guitar is good enough that I don't mind hanging onto it if I have to. the neck is amazing and the overall quality is spot on, way better that the '67 I had before. I'm only selling cos it's basically exactly the same as my 65. I just prefer the 65s colour and the A width neck. I'd rather sell the guitar than keep it but I think it's worth more than an AVRI Jag or the KC Mex Jag. especially if you consider all it needs to return it to stock if you wanted to (apart from the paint). Wunjo guitars have a Jag refin up just now for £2595. i know that's shop prices so it's different, just not £1500 different.

I don't put a lot of stock in the ' all Pre CBS is amazo" argument, (my Coronado is one of the best guitars I've ever played), but i will say both my 64 and 65 necks are the pre/CBS old style with the clay dots etc and they are overall better necks than my B+B ones. Better profile and they fell better....quality I suppose. I do think that's likely to be more of a case to case comparison than a blanket statement/rule of thumb tho I am doing a straight A/B comparison.

I know that the economy is in the shitter these days but I sold on my horror story '67 B+B Jaguar to a shop for £900 and that was refinned, routed, had newer pickups AND had other issues. The economy was just as bad then and Jags were significantly cheaper to buy in shops too.

Hopefully I catch someone I know who's thinking of buying an AVRI or something and get it shifted. I'd rather see it getting played than hanging on the wall and getting a sympathy strum every once in a while

Cool, glad to my estimate wasn't too far off!

Good luck with the sale, I'd have it if I had the money!
