Now the question is what should i buy? I never played that much bass guitar i have always played drums and guitar. But i started recording some demos and now i want to play it all.
I want a really shortscaled bass with a thin neck and at least 20 frets.

I have a great shortscale bass that I have been thinking about selling. I've been debating whether or not to put it up in the classified sections for like 2 weeks. I bought it for the same reason ... to record demos. But I never, ever play it and it's just collecting dust. What to do ... what to do.

I'm going to go out on a limb and recommend you buy a Mustang or Musicmaster.

Most definitely. The one I may get rid of is a MM and it's my favorite bass ever.

Sorry admins, I swear I'm not trolling a sale in the wrong section, I'm having an existential crisis.

I saw a 1970's black on black musicmaster bass the other day at my local GC for $500....I thought about picking it up on the spot even though just on impulse due to the price...then I went home looked it up and realized that price was spot on for what they sell for all day long.

I suggest you look into that route...you'll have something really cool that's likely not to go down in value. It was a good player too.

just get a bronco bass and an older bass POD. Record that mofo direct... It's a bass, you're making demo's. it doesn't matter that much :D

The new squier mustang basses are 250 or so... not too bad either.

Yeah, there's a few squier short scale basses around that look pretty cool, I haven't played any but I'd wager that they're probably better than most basses for a similar price.

I recently bought the shortscale Squier Jaguar for recording stuff at home. I'm not a proper bassist but it's exactly what I needed and sounds/plays great. Fantastic value for money too.

The Squier Mustang basses also look pretty good (haven't played one though).

For $200, taxes included, the Squier Jaguar SS is a phenomenal piece of bass. The pickups are pretty average, but if you upgrade them, you'll have an even better bass that's still quite cheap.
It's exceptionally playable an comfortable and the agathis body is quite light. The satin neck is quite comfy too. As a primary bass player, this is my suggestion if you want a cheap bass that you're not going to use as your primary instrument... Hell, I might even suggest it as a primary (with a couple electronic upgrades for the future).

The Squier Mustang is pretty decent, but it's more expensive, not as much bang for buck as the Jag SS.
The Squier Bronco is pretty fun, but not as good as the Jaguar at about the same price.

I have a squier bronco bass that i modded with a musicmaster pickguard and more importantly a lace sensor pickup. It's great.
I came from the same position - guitar player wanting a bass just for demos and it fills that job perfectly. The bronco bass is cheap so no worries about the paintwork etc. And with the lace sensor it sounds pretty damn good.

I have been meaning to check out the new Squier Mustang Bass. I am not a bass player but that might be enough to push me over the ledge.

I'd recommend looking at the new stuff that Squier has put out recently. What kind of price range are you looking at? I'm betting about 99% of the vintage or semi-vintage ss Fender basses will be
a) above it, unless you're willing to spend 400+ €
b) nearly impossible to find in the first place.
this is simply by deducting the following: Finland + want a bass to record with = want it now for cheaps, where as Finland + ss vintage Fender + reasonable price = IMPOSSIBLE.

So, if you want a bass now, go for the Squiers, but if you want something fancier, be prepared to wait for it. Also maybe Ibanez? You can get pretty decent deals on JetKings from time to time. Or a hofner, since they can be had for cheaps, but I have absolutely no idea whatsoever what the quality will be.

if i got a new bass, it'd be one of those CV jazz basses.

I do love my CV P-Bass...for the money it's a great instrument.

I only mentioned a vintage Music Master because he mentioned wanting something shortscale. IIRC Jaguar Basses are short scale too

Only the Squier Jaguar Bass SS; all other Jaguar Basses are 34"

Oh shit, I made a typo there....

Meant to say Jaguar basses are full scale. I was unaware that they actually do make a short scale model now

Yeah, think it was released in about November or December?
Here's my wife's Jaguar Bass SS next to my Jaguar -

They really are a great bass, and at $200 after tax (I think it actually came to $204 with my 15% sales tax), it's an incredible value.
