This is what you call a pawn shop special. Needs a bit of work as you can see

But.. $250 USD for a 58 Duo. pickguard is all cut and the nut/neck needs a little attention

Can't really complain getting a vintage fender for that much. What do the extra switches do? And what's up with the bridge P-up? Is that two single-coils?

Not complaining at all.

The switched turn on the pickups. it is 2 pups. Whomever it was squeezed 2 single coil's together. The 2 original ones I believe are still there but the covers were trimmed off (oddly enough they left the "sides" of the covers that surround the pups.)

Nut is like 1/8" tot long on each side

Whole thing needs some serious elbow grease to clean up.

Good news.

Neck is very straight.
Truss rod seems to work
I think all the original pups are here
bridge is rusted, but in tact
frets are in good shape (though a couple are lifting a little bit..possible refret in the past maybe?)
No serious body issues
All tuners funtion and seem to hold though the high E seems to loose tension really quickly when you detune but holds as you are tuning upwards.

important question.

Should i try to "restore" it (new - vintage replacements nut, guard, missing screws, pup covers)

since it is already messed with just get it back playing and enjoy the fucker.

Personally I am not the "restoring" type in the sense of trying to make it look new again.

I would just do what it takes to set it up how I like it...if that means a new pickguard and some pickups then that's all I would do. Maybe a string tree to replace the missing one and a new bridge if the rust bothers you.

If it were me I would clean that mofo up good and get a black or tort pickguard (cause I wouldn't care about giving it a paint job and would just want a different color to contrast the body), and two high output alnico single coils....one vol, one tone, three way switch, keep it simple.

Looks awesome though man, great score!

Excellent score.
I'd be tempted to slap a relic'd paint job on the body if it were me but it looks cool as is.

What a bargain... I'd be tempted to leave the finish as is, too.

I would not worry about bringing it to vintage showroom condition.
There is no doubt that can be made to be a great player.
Duo's are fun guitars.

STEAL. I just did something similar but payded a lot more for the guitar. Don't be fooled by the price--they didn't know what they had.

If I were you, I would paint it like I did here, with at least a light coat of color and light coats on the neck to protect the wood. It would be easy to assume that it has fared well without paint, but I would guess that there was paint on it until somewhat recently. Paint protects the wood from dryness, dents, and grime that could damage it. I used the wrong color on mine. I should have used the whiter sand (57) with the gold guard instead of the 59. I have a bunch left in the can if you want it. Like Cooter said, you don't want it to look new. Just less bare, or as if someone took slightly better care of the original.

Hell, it's spring. I could even paint it for free if you'd like. But you're missing out on some fun.

I have to take off for a bit, but will investigate.

Will it kill the pics if they are too large. They were working yesterday?
