Recently, I've been thinking about picking up one of these. They're pretty cheap and while they lack certain mod cons, they provide something different.

Anyone got any experiences/recommendations/suggestions?

Analogue multi-fx??

Got an example?

Probably means the old UE series from Ibanez or maybe some early 80s~90s BOSS (like the BE-5) stuff - but they may have the odd digital delay in them so not truely analog/analogue.

I remember seeing some big analog multi-fx unit from the 70's? once. Can't remember who made it though. looked like a big mutron pedal with about 4 modes. It seemed like the kind of thing that would be prohibitively rare

I've seen Ibanez and Aria ones recently for not-silly money, admittedly not on eBay, but I think they'd stay fairly low there too due to the bum rap multi-FXs generally receive. The Ibanez one has a Tube Screamer (808, I believe) built in and an analogue delay. Not too shoddy if you have a use for those.

I've seen those Ibanez UE400/405 machines about, don't really see there's much advantage in a big rack over a few pedals.

BUT, at some point someone with the skills will build a modular analogue multi fx that uses control voltages like an analogue synthesizer to patch lfo and envelope follower/trigger modulation to any effect parameter.

and that's precisely the reason they don't stay fairly low. the far reaching effects of tubescreamer mania. but I think it's actually 9 series not 808.

yeah triggered filters or modulation is way cooler than envelope follower. I wish moog made a guitar filter pedal like that.

I was thinking of things like the BE-5, and I'll check out the Ibanez too.

On the filter point, I bought a DSI Evolver desktop with the idea of using it as a filter pedal controlled via MIDI although, as time is not my bitch, I've not had a chance to try it out yet. It also comes with a nice bit-decimator and numerous envelopes, LFOs and delays which I hope will make for some mental guitar action.

Isn't the Moog MuRF sort of like that?

The filter sweep on an EHX Micro Synth is on a trigger. Synthwise I think a Korg MS10 or even better an MS20 has all the patching you would need to trigger filter envelopes. The MS20 even has a pitch to CV converter - so you can do all kinds of sound things.

The cost a million pounds though. I totally should've stolen the one the Uni had...

nah that's just a bunch of bandpass filters that you set to different sequences. I don't think there is any sort of triggering it just sits there blooping away. which could be cool, I'm not really interested in that though. I just want to trigger a fat filter sweep when I play a massive big muff chord. or use it with a synth. with an envelope follower it seems to me that it just stays "open" the whole time and never really sweeps.

that EHX micro synth looks like the ticket, I think I was looking at it before. it's just a bit pricy.

speaking of pricy but really cool options, just found this one
