I like Robert Smith's 3rd pickup mod better

see, I'm in this boat. It looks really cool but none of the mods make any sense to me. I'm going to take the neck pickup and move it back and add a less cool neck pickup. I like 3x3 tuners in stead of 6 in line, for no real reason. You say it has a trem? It's not a bigsby? Fuck it, I like the bigsby trem better.Nick wrote:I like the look, but at second glance all I can do is ask "WHAT? WHY?"
I understand people tune-o-matic-ing their jazzys but this? just doens't make sense to me.

I've not much personal experience (unlike some members on the boards DGN8R Stewart ect who own actual examples) but Curtis Novak took one apart and it looks to be a similar design but with a smaller bar magnet housed inside rather then underneath the coil.westtexasred wrote:Ah! are they like a P-90?Mr.Ripley wrote:It's a Coronado pickup

err... yeah. robert smith's pickup mod was cool, but this is just a hack job. I'm pretty much of the personal opinon that all of these mods are shit, poorly done, and add nothing beneficial to the appearance or functionality of the guitar. but hey, maybe I'm being a bit hard on them. maybe they just liked the coronado pickup and bigsby. OK. they're poorly installed, and I prefer a jag trem to a bigsby, but whatever, this guy just preferred it that way. so, fine enough. but none of that stuff on the headstock makes any sense, or look like it's helping anything in any way, and just adds an overall sense of fuckwittery to the whole job.

cogito ergo sum...thing or other...
Had I not just bought one, I might have been all over that shit. Those old tuners sell for $200 alone. I kind of like the look. Then again, with a 59 I would have had to fix it.
Tell me this isn't the same MANIAC. It a botch with black paint and a weird hook on the top, sold by the same pawnshop. It also connects the Grover tuners.

There are some interesting ideas in there I can't help but think it's absolutely tragic. Maybe - just maybe - if the modder had been more careful and done the jobs properly I could at least understand it and call it acceptable. A 'hack job' indeed. I think Bigsbys *look* cool in a Jules Verne/steampunk kind of way but there's no way I'd actually want to use one! I know I'm in a minority who actually like the Jazzmaster trem, but honestly...I'd have the Bigsby off that thing in a heartbeat.
Actually, I'd want this guitar just to get the poor thing back to original spec. $1,742.77 sounds like a lot of money though, when you'd have to either 1. redo the mods properly or 2. restore her to her former beauty. It makes my inner JM fanboy shed a Manly Tear.
