actually not a new guitar day at all really, i bought this some weeks ago, but there you go... looks like this one has suffered at the hands of a youngster - huge crack in the back of the body, some little dents in the neck and frets and a little bit of mud on the front!

the pickups actually sound pretty great and i'm finding the super short scale neck to be surprisingly playable. might have a go at 'rolling' the edges of the fingerboard. the tuners are a bit shite but if you tune up to like G they seem to hold tune much better. will try putting some heavier strings on it soon.

the really good news is it cost me £13.50.

i don't have the tech knowledge to file/sand the frets down without making a total mess, but i've polished the sharp/rough edges out of the fret dents with steel wool and the strings go over them ok now.

i have some evil plans for a yuri landman style mod and a halfords-based budget refin. anyone know if i'll be able to chip the paint away from the crack outwards (it's quite wide) to get the poly finish off, or will i need to take heat/chemicals to this thing?

There's a tutorial over on the Stewart-MacDonald site where they use a heat gun to effortlessly strip off a polyester finish. I tried it on an 80's strat copy, with polyurethane finish, without the same success and ended up using a chemical stripper and sanding instead, but my understanding is that it works best on the new polyester finishes.

I recently stripped my Jagmaster which had a chip, working outwards from the chip the paint basically peeled straight off. I was left with just the undercoat which was quickly and easily sanded off.

i got one of these in pink for my girls.

hmmmm, they do make it look pretty easy. i had a go at just prying some of the paint away from the body at the crack, and this is what i found:
From the inside out: (1) wood (2) thick layer of cloudy/colourless plastic(?) (3) extremely thin layer of red (I had to angle it away from the camera for it to even show in the photo).

likewise, from the crack I chipped it from:
Is this what all poly finishes look like? I was expecting a think layer of red plastic rather than super thin red over whatever that is!
