Yeah... there's $3700 worth of tone knob, headstock wood and finish.

No brainer, really.

I'd disagree. Having played some similar low-end Gibsons I'd say these were still about $200 over-priced.

I agree... but that's not the intended point of the comment; I was just comparing the price difference.
But, yes, the Melody Maker line isn't even fit for firewood.

I really love the headstocks on these guitars. The black one, I'd probably hit it. Saw one in Leeds a bit ago but for some reason didn't ask to play it (although I did play a Kurt Cobain Jaguar in the same shop the same day - I didn't like it).

For real, these are probably the worst guitars ever put into production ever. The few I've played, the fretnpard was actually coming off the neck

Most guitar companies make fretboards. Gibson only makes the highest quality fretnpards.

When the Feds seize all your quality tone-woods all you can make is FRETNPARDS.

guitar shop here had like 8 of the last melody makers they made (the les paul SG's) 7 of the 8 were crap and the special one was on par with a mexican fender i'd reckon... But it doesn't matter because the clerk bought the fucking thing anyway.

They're doing reissues of those shit Chinese guitars that swamped all the shops around 1995-2002. They weren't Gibsons, but some of them looked a bit like Gibsons, so in an ultimate act of spite Gibson are making their own, guitars that look like they might be alright but in actual fact are the single worst thing you could ever pretend to try and play as an actual musical instrument.

It's just that, in time-honoured Gibson fashion, some mix-up at the office meant that these ended up being sold as actual guitars and with a 400% markup. It's a shame, really.

I've got an older (mid 2000s) Melody maker, and they saved money in the right places, so it still plays and sounds good.

But these things are awful

Yeah, that's the one. The join between the 2 pieces of wood is way too obvious, but otherwise its great.
