DS-1

I picked this up.

Boss DS-1 Black Label

Once it arrives, is there a sure way to confirm it is legit? I know the black lable on the bottom and the squared power input should be a way, but what would be stopping someone from taking a new one and swapping the guts so it looks like a black label?

Theres a serial number in the battery compartment that you can check on the roland website I seem to remember.

Couldn't someone still take out the cercuit board and swap it with one of the newer DS-1's? If the serial is on the box, it would still be possible to scam someone, right?

Did you see photos of the label before buying? I had an older DS1 and i'm sure it was paler in colour to the modern ones, in the photo it looks almost new.

No, but it was titled black lable. If it doesn't have that when it arrives, I will most certainly ask for a refund because it was not as described then. I have seen pictures of them being lighter and darker orange. It seems to vary a bit. I guess I can always open her up and look for the Toshiba chip.

Bottom should look like this:

Guts should look kind of like this with that Toshiba chip:

We shall see LOL. I have a DS-2 already. I got money for father's day from my mom (I know it is odd) and thought about picking up a pedal. I looked in to the DS-1's and saw the info about the older chips having a better sound to them and went to looking. Hopefully this one sounds good. I just want to make sure when it gets here that I didn't get ripped off. The shop near my house has new ones for $49. I don't want a rehoused one of those that is made to look like a black label. LOL

I doubt anyone would go to the bother of this on a $50 pedal TBH. If there's a label in the battery compartment, this is a good indication. Not all early Taiwans had this though. Take some snaps when you get it.
Also, some infos HERE

I normally wouldn't think so either, but since people are trying to sell the Japanese ones for $200+ I wouldn't put it past people to try to scam. I will make sure to take a bunch of pics and then some gut shots as well and post them here. I will be happy most likely either way. The new ones are like $50 and I got this for $65. If it turns out the seller was trying to scam me, it will be no problem to send it right back for a refund.

Boo. He sent me a silver one. I contacted him. He thinks he sent me the wrong (duh not hard to miss the silver label) one and will fix it.

I got a similar thing, but it worked out great.
Bought what was pictured, and advertised as a Black Label Taiwan DS-1 from Cash Generator for £23 odds plus shipping. Upon opening the box, a shinny silver label met me. On further inspection it wasn't even a DS-1. The good news is it was a DS-2, and it was Made in Japan. These are pretty darn rare.

Cash Generator Idiots - 0

As for the expensive DS-1's, some are long dash silver screws. I believe some might even come with a momentary LED, and some with a clear switch. These ones are the ones that should command a higher price, especially amongst collectors. The standard Japanese ones should still command a fair price, but not $200!!!
I have 3 long dashers, but someone has replaced the silver screw on one. I'm not a collector (as you probably won't believe) so I'm not arced. I wanted them for the sound.

As for making fakes, I haven't really seen that happen. I've seen people trying to say it was MIJ, when the image of the label clearly states MIT. But no gut replacements.

For example, this guy is trying to get long dash silver screw price for a standard MIJ....
eBay

This one is a rare beast. Thumb cut boxes are from very early pedals. The fact the pedal doesn't have a clear switch makes me think it's not the box for that pedal, but I'm not sure. I know a bit about these but I'm no expert. The old DS-1's are one of my favourite pedals.... You can see the elongated dash between the DS and the 1. Also a nice silver screw in it's bum.

Fuck, I have brought myself shame... will commit sudoku at once.

I actually don't know anything about Kurdtz's DS-1 except the Japan thing, DiMarzio Jag ---> DS-2 was my fave of his sondz, no matter what amp he used.

I never dyed my hair blonde but I did try to once before I knew about bleaching, it came out orange so I wore a Ross Perot mask for a few weeks so nobody would pay attention to me.

LOL

I will keep y'all updated. If he drops cash off of it I will just keep it, but a used newer DS-1 should not be that expensive.

Seller agreed to refund me $35 to keep it so I will have it bascially for $30 which seemed pretty fair for a used DS-1. I couldn't find any good demos of the black ones to really get too worked up about it. The (cruddy) demos I found on youtube didn't sound all that different. I think it will work.
