NGD... fucking Ibanez Talman!

Those who know me know I've been GASsing for a Talman for quite some time. I don't mind taking one in that needs a bit of work, but is otherwise playable, so I knew that if I held out, I could get a decent deal. There was one for $130 recently that I missed out on, but it was a base model talman from the end of the product line (ie- less desirable), and it needed a ton of work.

Then I found this. It was on ebay. I called the seller directly with an offer, emphasized that if he took it off ebay, he'd save on the commission, and made a special shipping request (Priority Mail + tracking to a PO Box in PR). Offer was accepted. It is mine.

It's an Ibanez NDM1, the weird duct tape Noodles signature Talman. Another guitar from a player I'm not a fan of (although I do enjoy an occasional Offspring song on the radio). It's got a bright red SD Pearly Gates on the bridge, a removable pickup cover on the neck, and a fair amount of buckle rash and missing duct tape on the back.

I'll probably just take off the pickup cover from the neck, put some new duct tape + clear on the back, and leave it as is. I'm excited. This isn't the Olive Green P90 TC620 Talman I used to have, but this seems like it'l be tons of fun.

I have seen a lot of Talmans, but that is wild. The pink humbucker looks good.

My roommate from college had one of the really nice ones. His Talman was translucent green

Cool. Talmans are so rare these days im pleased they did these NDM models. It looks better fucked up because that is surely what the duct tape idea is all about anyway.
Pearly Gates are excellent pups as well, i bet it sounds great.

I'm loving the duct tape. And the red humbucker might be growing on me. Great find.

I already got a tracking number, sweet! The guitar's coming from Chico, CA, so if I'm lucky, she'll be here in a week.

Once I get her in, and decide if I like her or not, then sure.

And if I don't like her, she goes for sale here, and someone else can do an demo :D

I've already thought about putting a Duckbucker, or another stacked HB in the middle and having my first HHH guitar though. But not until I sell my Silvertone Hornet.

Holy shit. The guitar's already at the post office. This is like a new speed record. I'm gonna go during lunch to pick it up.

really exciting NGD-- i kidna hate the duck finish but I love that it comes w a Pearly Gates HB-- I wonder what kind of finish is under the duct tape? just sealer or a layer of poly?

And she's mine. She came exactly as described. I learned that the guitar had no finish under the duct tape. It was duct taped + light grey transparent poly over. And the exposed wood on the back was really sticky (giggity)... so I put fresh duct tape over it and left it at that. I might have it cleared, or I might remove all the tape from the body and headstock and have myself a natural Talman. But that's for another day. Personally, I feel that out of all of the Mustang/Jag inspired guitars, the Talman hit it best in making it seem like it could have been there, while giving it its own personality. And it's also the only way a 3+3 headstock makes sense to me with that style body.

I then removed the hideous pickup cover from the neck pickup, strung it and set it up.

First impressions, really fast and comfy neck. Comfortable fingerboard radius, and the satin finish actually impresses me. And while the tone is good, and the Pearly Gates pickup is wonderful, the Ibanez Infinity pickups in the neck and middle don't impress me, so they're the first thing to go. I don't know with what they'll be replaced, but they're gone as soon as I sell some gear and make a decision (oh, and finish on two other projects). The ideas floating in my head include swapping all 3 out for Dragonfire screamers + a TBD single coil and swapping out the neck and middle for black GFS lipstick bucker + lipstick SC.

And pics as of how it looks now.
