NGD - Squier Vista Venus Guitar

I have been going back and forth with this guy on CL for a while and I finally got the trade done today.

I have never played a Vista Series guitar in the flesh, though I did have a Vista Jagmaster neck once. The quality of these guitars is fantastic and second to none.

This Venus in pretty good shape and a couple of minor nicks to the finish. The action is perfect and is setup with .11s :) The pickups are pretty bright. I like the neck pickup with its throaty tone and the humbucker is okay.

The neck is the real story. It's chunky, but in a good way and I love the binding, the skunk stripe and the poly finish is very nice. The pearloid guard has the slightly aged look and really pops. The only improvement would have been to find the Sea Foam green one or the 12 string version.

There's something about Fenders with binding on the neck, isn't there? I dunno...it just look really classy and...special. Coloured headstock FTW!

That Venus looks a bit odd and awkward, but as a Jazzmaster fanboy I salute oddness and awkwardness. Congrats!

Damn, I really really want one of these !!!!!!!!!! My next guitar I hope.

There's one on eBay Uk for £395 but I think that's a touch too much.

Can I ask what you paid ?

What is weird is the guitar has almost no contours. No tummy cut and the arm contour is there, but it is ever so slight. If Squier/Fender had put a Jaguar Arm contour/tummy cut it would be a lot more comfortable.

This pic of Courtney is interesting because the pickguard extends all the way to the lower horn and it has Squier on the headstock. Maybe a prototype. I thought all her guitars said "Fender".

They cut the pickguard on this one to make room for the decals

Here is a shot of her playing the Sea Foam Green model; You can see the "Fender" logo

This might be a cool pickup upgrade idea if I keep the guitar long term. Except I would use black Robroe covers.

Upgraded ElectronicsLace Sensor Blue (neck)Lace Sensor Silver/Red (HB in bridge)The 3 way switch has been replaced and the single volume pot has also been replaced to a push/pull so that you can get four different sounds:
1. Neck (single coil blue) only
2. Split HB (silver Lace acting as a single coil — low output traditional single coil sound)
3. HB in parallel (gives a very jangly sound)
4. HB in series (traditional HB high output setting)

Yeah, it is a prototype/custom. In addition to the pickguard being different it has just a dragonfly inlay at the 12th, and a bigger headstock than the production models just like the Coronado/broomstick acoustics.
In a Guitar World cover article on Hole when Celebrity Skin came out there was a shot of all of her and Eric Erlandson's guitars
The Fender XII was Kurt's and the dark stain at the bottom of the body is from the bathtub incident.
And they didn't cut the pickguard on that blue one, she's just slapped a bumper sticker over it. A picture from that same shoot of Courtney was a pull-out poster in the magazine, with Dave Murray's '50s Strat on the other side.

The different pickguard might've been an early attempt to distance it from the Mercury guitar it was a copy of

The Green one looks more like the Mercury guitar that Love stole the design from and gave to Fender as her work...

They are interesting. The string spread behind the bridge looks weird to me. Any issues with strings popping out of the TOM?

So far, no strings popping off the TOM bridge. It's strung with .11s so its appears snug.

Cool. Just trippy to see the high E and low E bend out in opposite directions from the bridge. :)

How can you possibly know that?

Because she had that lime green one custom made by them in 1994-1995 and passed the design to Fender to make as her signature. The original creator (Tim) posts on OSG and if you google Mercury guitars you can find that info too.

From Wiki Answers
Courtney Love of the alternative group Hole, used a Mercury custom in lime green in 1994-1995, and made her own model, Squier Venus, from the Vista series by Fender, released in 1998-1999. She based her signature fender model off the Mercury model she used at the time, and Rickenbacker guitars. However since the band's 2010 tour, she has only used an Rickenbacker model.
Tim was in the process of making a left handed one for Kurt before Kurt died. You can see the body in Tim's stack.

Tim and Danny are working on revamping them and rebuilding them again. They are setting up their workshop and updating some of their tools.

I've posted the whole story somewhere on here. I'll have a quick look.

Also the Mercury guitar was originally intended as a present for Kurt. But the builder hadn't clocked that Kurt was a lefty. Courtney saw it and took it for herself.

Yup. The easiest way to see she stole the design is the Mercury came out before her Venus model. Wasn't it nice of her to keep the planet name theme while taking credit for the design? LOL

Honestly, Courtney is not the most creative person. There is very little she has done that is original. Her best work in Hole (in my opinion) had help from the Nirvana crew.

Classic. And wrong.

I'm going to skip to the end here; Courtney hate tends to come from the very worst type of misogyny there is: the denialists. "I love women! I just reserve special hatred for Courtney Love doing all those things I turn a blind eye to my favourite male rockstars doing!"

They couldn't make anymore Mercury guitars because they were a bunch of dumb asshole kids who fucked up a half-decent operation. Absolutely nothing wrong with that at all. But what were Fender/Squier going to do, say Courtney Love designed the custom guitar she had made for her or print on the adverts that it was made by a bunch of stoners who destroyed a nice big farmhouse with sparkler bombs?

UHHHHHH.

If they ever wanted to start building the guitar again then they could. Nobody has really stolen anything from them apart from an almost completely unattributable credit to a bunch of random guys who built a guitar Love (and Cobain) liked and wanted more of. I seriously doubt Love took the guitar to Fender and said "HAI GUYS I BUILT A GUITAR LOLOLOLOL"
