I was wondering, how much better are the Fender MIMs over the new Squiers? I'm sure the Fender is better, but I've read good things about the current Squiers, so I don't know if the quality difference matches the price difference. If anyone's tried both, I'd appreciate your opinion.

I would personally go Squier.

I played both older models and thought they were basically the same, tho to be honest I didn't like either of them. I think they feel cheap, in the same way the bottom tier MIM stuff feels nasty.

If I had to choose one I'd go for the Squier.

Interesting. Thanks guys. I did notice also that the Squier is alder and the MIMs are supposedly poplar.

cobascis' MIM one was poplar. I know because I stripped it before I refinned it.

I should add that I don't really care about the pickups as long as the neck is good and the action is decent.

I just bought a squier neck off of ebay for 45 bucks and will be the basis for my new build. I figured someone would start parting these things out and, finally, it has started. Since they are going for around $150 I knew I could snag one for nothing sooner or later. Not really contributing to this thread, but I just got the thing a couple of days ago and am just excited about a new build.

i like the necks on the MIM ones best, as the squiers feel like plastic shit.

but then again, a MIM standard strat has my favorite neck profile/finish feel ever. i'll never sell mine, likely.

I think we're diametric opposites on this my least fave necks are the MIM standards. That just shows how individual people's preferences are with guitars. On the cyclone the neck was the bit I hated the most, closely followed by the body. I don't know if it was the actual thickness of the body vs the size or the contouring but it just felt all wrong to me. Tho my friend I gave it to loves that damn thing!

I'd definitely say the cyclone is a try before you buy kinda guitar.

The tint on the Fender necks is beautiful. I have an orange fender and a squier cyclone from the first run and the fender just feels more professional.

Hey I like squier. I just don't like the squier cyclones much.

The luthier was in shock when I had him redecal my Supersonic, replacing the 'Fender' some jackass put on there with 'Squier'. It was the first time he ever had a customer request that.

If I was going to leave something stock I wouldn't care if it said squier but if I am just gonna use the neck for a project I'm gonna put a fender logo on it.. I don't understand what's so bad about it.

there's nothing wrong with it but to go to all that work to replace what's on the headstock seems a bit pretentious when it's far easier to just not mess with it. it doesn't effect tone etc. etc.

I don't care if you want the Fender decal on it, it's your guitar. To act like you're just doing it because it's a project guitar is false, you're doing it because you don't want people to think you're playing a Squier. Just be honest with yourself, homie.

Lol because the neck is the only squier part of the guitar and that headstock is being refinished with a musicmaster logo because I want it to look like a musicmaster not a parts guitar.

I have toyed with the idea of picking one of the Squier models, refinish the neck and go all Cyclone II up in here.

I would personally go with the Fender if you can find a good used one but for $200 you can't beat the Squier.
