homebuild patch bay help please

id really like to make a little patch bay for my pedal board. for no reason other make the in and out points a bit easier, hopefully saving mere seconds when setting up and ripping down
can anybody give me a clue how you do it or point me in the right direction to some resources.....
i can solder pretty well, so im confident i can do it i just some instructions to follow really. im guessing it not just a case of connecting the points on the opposing jacks? that would be too easy right?
id like a 4 in 4 out arrangement. guitar in, out (for overdrive n stuff) and effects loop send and return (for delays and modulation)
cheers guys
