Anyone ever played one of these? Seems ridiculously good value for money - what's the catch?

I have one of the original 90s reissues in blue sparkle. It is an amazing guitar. The catch is that the CEO of Danelectro was a supporter of Proposition 8, basically meaning that if you buy new from them you are directly contributing to a company whose profits and personal values work towards the suppression of peoples' civil rights. It is up to you. Obviously Proposition 8 ended but it's still a company with that black mark against its name. However, many still buy used which is the "legitimate" option.

Ah I see. Yeah I just Googled that and I really didn't realise. What a twat. Definitely will not be buying new.

They come up on ebay a lot so you will not have much trouble. I thoroughly recommend them. The original reissues are supposedly better but I've also really enjoyed playing the new ones. If you want to be able to tell the difference, the original 90s reissues have a natural headstock, the new ones are painted.

Yeah I've seen a few on eBay but they usually end up going for only slightly less than the price of a new one.

Singer in my band has one for his studio, I've only ever played a couple of 12 strings (one being an old Vox semi acoustic)
The action seemed really great on the Danelectro compared to the vox, obviously this can be achieved with a proper set up etc.
It's super jangly as expected and seems to be of decent build quality.

I really want one of my own but have no money

I always wanted to make my own when I saw how much they are used, usually. I'm betting it's a lot cheaper to build one too. I saw this thread from the reranch forums and this thread with pics of old Dano's innards, I thought that it should prove to be a fairly simple thing to do.

All you really need is several sheets of plywood cut into whatever Dano shape you want with the hollow wings glued together, masonite back, masonite front routed for electronics, pickups, pots, jack, wiring added, tape the sides, add pickguard, add neck, and you've got a Danelectro guitar. I've been thinking of doing that instead of fixing up my shitty old Johnson.

I already have a 12-string acoustic; it's the only 12-string I've ever played (it's a Vintage VEC500-12).

I assume the only way to play an electric 12-string would be on a clean(ish) setting? Are they one-trick ponies?

It was really shitty. I would rather have a home-made hollow plywood Danelectro shell than that guitar. I'd use the neck though.

Cleans and lower gain jangles are where it nestles best but you can go prog fucking crazy with a 12 string. I used to own a 12 string knock off SG and it was fantastic with gain and fuzz, especially for the lead, the Dano is obviously less so but you just have to really tweak it to get what you're looking for. It can be MADDENING at first, but my advice is to get a compressor

I would say one of the best guitar tones of all time is John Mclaughlin shredding the fuck out of his double neck SG during the Mahavishnu Orchestra days.

George it is agreed that Stephen Ridinger (owner and President of the Evets Corporation who runs Danelecto) is a dick, but regular people like us, both heterosexuals and homosexuals work for Evets Corporation/Danelectro and need to make a living. Refusing to purchase new Danelectro guitars because of Mr Ridinger's beliefs will likely hurt the llittle people more than it will harm him.

In other words, keep funnelling money to a homophobe who spends money on curtailing basic human rights because if we don't some people might end up being laid off by said homophobe and all round nice guy.

find one of the earlier korean made models, they are better made
