Acoustic Pickup - Fishman Rare Earth

Post by Gabriel »

So I'm playing guitar for a musical in a couple of weeks and 3/4 of the set involves playing an acoustic guitar. So I set about looking for a pickup to fit to my Larrivee. I decided that I want to go the magnetic route as it would be the easiest modification - I wouldn't even have to drill out the endpin as Larrivees come drilled for an endpin jack.

Initially I was going to for a LR Baggs M1A, but after a bit of snooping around online I came across the Fishman Rare earth pickups. A range of pickups designed by Michael Vanden, of Vanden guitars - who build guitars for none other than Martin Taylor. I found a good deal at soundlive so I decided to spring for the humbucking model. Reviews stated that the humbucker model was slightly warmer sounding, but the main selling point for me is the volume control which allows me to turn my guitar off which will be useful between numbers at the show.

So I fitted the pickup today, I recorded a brief demo straight into my laptop to show how it sounds.
