Mike Bloomfield's first telecaster

Post by westtexasred »

The one he played at Newport

Telecaster forum member "602mx" claims it is under his bed!

Here is some information and photo's I gleaned from a very long thread he posted by on the Telecaster forum (link)

" I have some history on the guitar...It was traded even to John Nuese... guitarist of Gram Parson's International Submarine band for John's early 50's Les Paul Gold Top..That was Bloomfields first Gibson...John said Mike played it and had to have it!..So they traded even..
Cool to know that the Gold Top is around!
The Tele is under my bed...."

"It has been cut for a left-handed player(now double cutaway)and used by J. Nuese with the International Submarine Band before Parson's death.. it is well used...now sits idle...the tales it could tell..."

(uncut version in "The Trip" footage below)

"Now...Some of you don't seem to understand why this tele was cut...

Yes it was stupid as we look at it!...Now...but it was done back in the early 70's when John was still playing it.!..He explained to me that it was done to make the guitar comfortable for him...(He plays left-handed but with RH stringing!)Plus he said we all did some crazy stuff!

He related that he didn't care or know then that it would be a piece of music history someday..... "We just played whatever guitar we liked at the time" ...there was no regard for collecting or preservation!....but today it may be different."

"Hey guys ...Here are some very amateur photos of the guitar..."

Easily the loudest instrument onstage for the entire '65 festival. I based my Tele on it when I was really into the first Butterfield Blues Band album. When they play in Festival (not the Dylan portions, and the earlier of their two sets which they play on a smaller stage) there's some great close-up shots of it.

Fun fact: Mike's family owns the coffee machine company still an industry standard today, which is where his family money came from.
