Difference between AVRI and Squier VM pickups?

For Jaguar and/or Jazzmaster.
Worth the upgrade?

I'd prefer the VM pickups. They're bolder, higher output, more compressed sounding. I like that.
Never much of a fan of the AVRI pickups. My jags neck pickup was dark, muddy and lifeless and the bridge shrill, ear piercing and beyond useable for me. They lasted 2 days in my guitar.
Which leads me to say, it's a preference thing. What works for one doesn't work for another.
Personally I would speak to Curtis Novak, out of all the pickup companies that deal with offset / shortscale pickups, he seems to have a good reputation and many happy customers. One day I'll give them a try.

As you're in the UK i'd contact Jaime at Handmade at the Creamery.

Novak makes excellent pickups (I love my JM-V/JM-FAT set in my Jazzmaster) but there are some decent UK makers around. Bare Knuckle and the Creamery are two I've heard good things about...the latter offers plenty of custom options, offering a similar service to Novak's without worrying about the Arsefarce ransom or HM Customs charges that come with the transatlantic postage.

I tried that and never got a reply so will never buy from them. Shame.

Not off hand, other than they're not on the cheap side. Take a look at his web site, it has all his range with prices - he'll do custom stuff too.

I really really like how my AVRI jag pickups sound, especially the neck, robust and plenty of high end, maybe yours were duds?
