I just got offered a trade for a '72 red S-50. It is the same as the pictured one but has a middle pickup only. Has anyone played one? I'm worried about having a single pickup that isn't in the neck or bridge. He wants 325$ in trade value. IT has a seymour duncan pearly gates..

Also Sandy is making my lights flicker. That is all.

Oh, and how about this scamp.....

Anyway, honest advice. If you get offered one of these 70's solid body Guilds, you have the trades/cashmonies for it, then don't hesitate. I will buy every single one that comes my way that I have cash for. Provided it's not fucked.

I would prefer it to have the original pickup, especially if it was a HB-1. Still, seems like there's a deal to be had there.
Replacing an HB-1 WILL be pricey.

Love Carrie, love dem Guilds. Once saw a white one (love white SGs), but the fingerboard and binding was peeling off.

DasBeef, what are the neck profiles like?

I used a friends for about a year, his had the Bigsby as well. It was a nice guitar but seemed less streamline than the Gibson SG, I'm sure the body was bigger and the neck was really chunky... but its going back 15 years.

If you mean radius, then I will admit I am a hack and have no idea.
But, I would say that the necks feel very, very flat. Action is awesome on all of them. I did put strings that were too heavy on the S-100, and it pulled the neck a bit raising the action. These things are apparently notorious for having spongey necks, and truss rod adjustments should be done gently gently. Not that I mess with this kind of witchery. I just put lighter strings on it again, and everyone was happy. Once it's set up though, it's magical.
I find them extremely nice to play. I firmly believe the S-100 makes me play better, just because it plays so well. It makes me want to keep playing. Build-wise, the just feel quality. Oh, and the sound fucking awesome. Basically, everything a good guitar should be. Aside from spongey necks.

If you're talking C neck or V neck as well I'm no help. I would say the feel thin, but it makes the fretboard feel wide, if that's any help.
Geez, I really know fuck all technical about guitars huh?

Hmmm...
That looks like it's seriously been fucked around with. Not sure but shouldn't that have the same tail piece as my S-100 and S-90?
I'd check what they're going for locally vs how much it would cost you to restore, then make an educated decision. Parts for these bad boys ain't easy to come by.

I don't think I would try to restore it. It has a new gibson bridge and a switch for coil splitting. Its a player for sure. Looks like someone made it a string through at some point too.

But were the new ones any good? There's a few that float around here 4 cheapz (also a Squier S-73, which apparently was modeled after the de Armond/guild originals/re-issues).

I think the Guildy Squier models might've even been them using up DeArmond bits after Fender's acquisition of the Guild brand (or at least after the deal with the DeArmond brand ended)? Some of them looked exactly the same except the pickups/some other hardware and they were both MIK, the S73 even had the same model name between the DeArmond/Squier runs.
On the quality front I'd rank most of the DeArmonds I played with MIK Epiphones (good). Definitely holds it's own against a G400.

Here especially it just looks like they sanded down the headstock tip and gave it a new pickguard/some Duncan Designeds.
