Seems worth it. Refin (or stripped finish) original electronics is a PLUS.

Does look a bit like a refin, but they did do natural ones.

Searching around I found a sold listing for a refin that went for 900, so seems like a pretty good deal.

A stock vintage melody maker retail is going to be priced higher than craigslist.
The guitar has some good things about it: it's the less common model, so they're usually valued a bit higher. The bad: it has been routed for hubuckers and the wiring isn't original and it'd definitely a refinish. I'm pretty sure these only came in red and blue.
$500 seems about right to me. I don't think it's the deal of the century but I'm really just speculating. A guitar center around me had a Melody Maker from 1965, with the two pickups, for $650 and it was all original but it wasn't the cool SG body style. Either way, at $500 bucks it's going to be a kickass guitar and it's hard to beat a cool vintage guitar at that price.

Be careful unless you what to keep the guitar forever don't spend too much for it. Refined and modified guitars are really hard to sell. Does it have a serial number? Alot of times when they are refinished the serial number is removed. With out the serial number it is worth much less. My advice would be save your $500 for another guitar.

Where would the serial number be on one of these babies? Just the body has be stripped and clear coated. Neck is original finish.
Original hardshell case definitely boost value a bit.
