This was fun. Good sustain plus a little flange, delay, and reverb can get you into sitar territory. I assume that this is an old trick I just discovered.

Seen a lotta interesting takes on getting sitar sounds with effects, this is a good un. Specifically I'm wondering about the buzzing quality though... I feel like I can identify what the flanger is doing so whats handling most of the heavy lifting? Also would be interested to know what kind of guitar you're using.
Like a couple of the other clips on your soundcloud too, I left it open and they started playing, some fun stuff there.
I've never been all that great at it but I like the filter matrix setting on a Poly Chorus with a bit of reverb or echo for a slightly sitar-like effect, occasionally with some low-gain/needly tone fuzz. If you crank the feedback control on the polychorus you can get some real crazy swells too.

You can get sitar like sounds out of a Boss DD-3 if you plug a cable into the direct out.

Slight delay, flange, and fuzz was the formula for that Danelectro sitar pedal.

Whenever I want a sitar sort of sound I play mandolin and then double track with slide guitar, that way you get both the slidey slide sound and the clonkyclonk sort of sound, which of course hardly facilitate playing live.

That track was a 90's USA G&L ASAT Special with the big-ass MFD pickups, on the neck pickup. I was just running it into my Yamaha THR10, using the onboard flange and delay/reverb, USB cord into my laptop tracked in audacity.
Love the polychorus; there's a track on my soundcloud called polycurious that's all about it.
