Telecaster neck pick up.

Hi Shortscale.

I think my neck pick up on my telecaster is broken, it sounds rather thin and seems to have lost a lot of output. I'm looking for a pick up that has a decent clean sound, I like to play jazz, but can also handle high gain. Any suggestions?

I've been doing a tiny bit of research into jazzy tele neck pickups for a project of mine.

Everyone seems to like to Charlie Christian lollar but that's mega money so off the menu for me. I like the look of a Seymour Duncan antiquity and hoping to grab one on eBay. Someone recommended SD quarter pounder, bareknuckle brown sugar or a Gibson 50's PAF (or copy)

That's my findings anyways. Feel free to disregard. Would love to hear what you go with.

I've read on other forums that the 72 Deluxe teles do this. Sorry, but I have no idea how to fix it.

Thank you. I will definitely check those out. The Charlie Christian pick up sounds amazing but as you said it's ridiculously expensive.

If you want a CC style pickup check out Vintage Vibe pickups, much more reasonably priced and with swappable magnets makes them slightly more versatile than other CC type pickups.

I hate the shape of those CC's. Ridiculously superficial of me but they are horrible.

The World's Best, biggest, snappiest and most toneful Tele Neck Pickups!! You know the problem with Tele neck pickups- The great looking and vintage correct chrome covered pickups tend to sound dead and totally bassy- And even if you get them overwound there's still no string snap. Hey- why should the Strat players have all the fun?? Back in the 80's I used to make these by hand- I'd start with a set of Strat fiber bobbins, carefully shave them down with an exact knife- drill out the holes to accommodate P Bass pole-pieces, the lacquer dip em, wind with 42 gauge Formvar wire on my sweet 1/2 HP Baldor motor pickup winding rig, wax dip the whole thing and dress it up with correct vintage black cord. The HUGE pole-pieces looked amazing, and my Tele had the kind of string snap and presence that NO TELE ON EARTH HAD. I played all over the place with that guitar, and due to popular request I sold a bunch for $90- even sold a few to some then-famous rock stars. 15 years later I finally had the scratch to have a proper run of these made, using my exact formula- I gotta say- these are amazing! These are ALNICO pole-pieces, all correct vintage everything, even cloth covered wires. I promise you- there is no better Tele neck pickup on the planet if you're after big, bold tone. You get one BRAND NEW GFS Alnico Fatbody neck pickup-As with all GFS high end pickups it's packaged with all installation parts and complete wiring instructions.

Ah I love how they look, but I'm big on the old school Jazz look. They also do them as standard humbucker style blade pickups and also singlecoil sized too.

I really want to try a Vintage Vibe pickup in one of my guitars.

Oh cool! I may check out the single coil sized ones. Thanks

I'm really liking the Dimarzio Twang King I have in my US Tele, they're also not too expensive - I got mine from Thomann.

I had a Twang King bridge pickup in a tele like 100 years ago and loved it as much as I could ever love a single coil. Can't speak for the neck version.

Has anyonw ever used any Lace Sensor pickups? I don't know how well the match my before stated criteria but I am both a huge Radiohead fan and a Smashing Pumpkins fan and like the way they sound.

I think they suck personally

Really flat and dull sounding at lower volumes

Comedy/not-often-considered option: G&L tele-sized pickup: http://www.glguitars.com/shopping/shopexd.asp?id=241 About the same cost as a new Fender pickup.

video of clean tones

ProGuitarShop demo with hella gain

Less classic-tele sounding, maybe.

The Twisted Tele is what's in the Baja right? That's the best Tele neck pickup I've ever played on, totally compliments the standard bright Tele bridge pickup as it has more high-end detail, allowing a step away from the usual 'BRIGHT>woofy muffled' thing that you get on Teles.

For years i dismissed the Tele neck pup as the inferior other to the bridge position but i have to say the one in my US standard has converted me. It is hallmark Fender tone.
Its all there, Morrellolz to Hendrix. The high end detail is still there and that woody tone is unmistakable.
