fender keeps getting more and more lazy with this guitar.

here is V 2.0 from a couple years ago. too lazy to make a duocaster pickguard. they just put a mustang cover in there with nothing under it

Richie's original mainstay Strat that his sigs were based on had the empty cover in the middle, being a modified factory Strat. I imagine this was just a case of "tributing" a bit more closely (i.e. copying a guitar he actually used/was photographed with a lot back in the day). I'd find it hard to believe that Fender were "too lazy" to make a pickguard with one tweak to it, when they were scalloping fingerboards for said model no less.

Note that the V1 has a strap button on the top-middle of the headstock face, which Richie did to his original "as a conversation piece". I bet most of these conversations regarded how lit he must've been when he did that.

Ah, after reading that article a bit more closely yeah, they're tributing his '69 Strat that he used in Deep Purple, hence the middle pickup.

So it went
V1: whatever he wanted at that point, 2 pickups and scalloped fingerboard
V2: how he modded a Strat before he had a sig, one pickup removed and scalloped fingerboard
V3: his first Strat, a bog-standard '69 model

Seems a bit weird that they'd give a regular old black Strat to some guy for a sig, but given it's got a U-profile and 7.25" radius it's probably a better Fender than 90% of the other shit they did this year. Then again it could be one of those $10,000 + background check models.
