Ska Pickups

Post by metalhead384 »

Hey so I am approaching the end of my les paul project, now all i need it a bridge pickup for the guitar. Basically I would like a cheapish one that can play ska punk to classic rock leads and so on and such.
Suggestions?

I suggest a humbucker size P-90. Many of the ska bands I have heard and a couple others that I personally know use single coils both for clean rhythm and distortion leads.

Since you're using a Les Paul, I suggest a humbucker sized P-90. These are only 30 dollars.

I wouldn't really think you could really pick a wrong pickup for ska, or guitar for that matter. I'd try and get passable sounds for the punk rhythms or classic rock lead tones, then just make sure you can get a loud clean tone out of your amp for the ska stuff, maybe a compressor. I always figured all the Cali ska guys were just ex-metalheads or punk rockers anyway.

Having said that, put a Dream 90 in the neck and a 4-wire bucker of some sort in the bridge and set them out of phase in the middle position. I had an SG like that and from memory that'd probably be the best thing I could recommend for a Les Paul aiming in that direction.
