Dunno if this old news; the website looks like something from the late 90s so you all might have heard of this stuff years ago. I'm kinda intrigued about what the deal is with these things though.

As in, is this guy doing an elaborately-staged criticism of the guitar industry or is he simply a nutjob with a bad attitude? I wasn't sure how to take his, how should I say, interesting approach to marketing. I WON'T SELL YOU MY GUITARS UNLESS YOU CAN PROVE TO ME THAT YOU'RE WORTHY OF MY PRODUCTS sounds batshit, but if he's one of those artisans who operates on a one-off basis, maybe that sort of business model isn't dumb after all.

The only thing that makes me question the validity of the whole thing is this: where is the feedback and discussion of Zachary guitars from people who own and use them? Who actually plays one? The only Google results come from people who poke fun at his Maddox-meets-Ed-Roman grandstanding. It IS kinda funny though...

Reading through his site, he sounds absolutely batshit insane. He writes walls of text that are so fucking crazy, it's impossible to read through it all without the aid of speed. Also, the insane amount of pictures he posts is crazy.

i think he's entitled to be as arsey as he wants, if people are buying his stuff, fair play to him. they look well made.

I can see where he's coming from in that Esquire article - the guy clearly knows a few things about building guitars, and presumably his moments of lucidity happen when his meds kick in or something. I think it's understandable that, if you're a skilled person taking the time and effort to build a musical instrument by hand, you want it to be used and appreciated as opposed to some blooz lawyer making a wall hanger out of it.

It's just...you have to prove your worthiness to him, but his only proof of the instrument being of quality is a series of close-up photos and walls of text full of expletives and insults. It seems pretty one-way and delusional to me.

The guitar stand part looks like a piss-take, pure and simple. Similarly, the article that makes fun of the Klon Centaur made me chuckle. The fact remains though that he's trying to be a genuine luthier/crastsman and call out the BS that permeates the industry, but he's doing it in a way that undermines any credibility he might otherwise have.

The headstocks look bloody awful to me, but I guess YMMV. Ten years ago I'd say I hated the look of a JM or a Jag!

Yeah I don't get what's so special about those stands. I have two just like it already.

1.) fancy wood does not make a guitar sound any better
2.) thick poly finishes are very plastic like
but he kinda double fucks himself in the ass in the article by stating that wood doesn't matter, and proves it by using discaded pine(leo started out using pine)
and the goes on to say that pine resonates and tries to imply that an oil finish will let the tone of the instrument ring thru.

im fucking sick of hearing that crap. there is more tone in your picking style and playing style than there is in the difference of wood or finish, IN THE CONTEXT OF AN ELECTRIC SOLIDBODY BOLT ON GUITAR.
as far as acoustics go, thats another ballgame. different wood and finishes will affect the sound. as well as bracing styles. body depth etc etc.
the guy has a few points. but he uses them to stab himself in the cock.
