Hi everyone, I'm interested in a vintage Mustang on eBay, but I'm not sure if it's real or not. Figured there's no better place to ask than here. Here's the link (please don't steal it from me : ): http://www.ebay.com/itm/1966-Fender-Mus ... 3f234c1e2b. It needs some repair and it has been refinished apparently. It's the pickup cavities that's putting me off. They look tampered with. Anyways let me know what you guys think. Any help would be much appreciated.

It's definitely a real vintage Mustang. It's a decent price, too. If it were any less (like $400), it would be gone. The routs are ugly, but hidden. I wouldn't think the cracks are any big deal. They are probably stable, or could be with thin superglue.

Can you fix things?

Yeah it's legit and a good price.

The bridge pickup has been hacked for a hambacker, but it's all hidden by the pick guard. I'd ask for more detailed pics of the cracks, but they don't look bad at all.

DGNR8, I'm kinda decent at fixing things with guitars. I was told the cracks weren't very deep at all which is a good thing.

The crack in the inside of the horn and the cracks round the neck look like a proper bit of body damage to me rather than paint cracks. You could spend your money better somewhere else.

its a 22.5 scale a width stang. those are pretty fucking rare. the neck is damn near worth 400 bucks by itself in some circles.
buy it, give it some love.

the Jack is replacement. the ground (black) wire coming off the jack is replacement.

both pickups are replacements. mustang pickups don't have GIANT FUCKING BAR MAGNETS ON THE BOTTOM OF THEM

neck looks legit. tunarz look legit. thats where the money is on this guitar like robOG said. other than that you get a hacked to shit body, repro pickups, repro neck plate, repro jack, and real volume and tone pots.

cant tell you if the bridge is real or not because the dumbass seller tipped the bridge on its side so you cant see the saddles.




personally i would rather have this beat to shit ruined one over a new one for 400 bucks though. but that's me, i could fix it myself if i had the time

The A width neck is rare but that doesn't really equate to value. They feel small at the nut and when you combine that with the even shorter scale you're looking at an even more niche market. i think if there was any real demand for them the guitar would have been snapped up straight away.

As a point of reference I got my '65 A width Jaguar neck (last run of clay dots/no binding) for £100. The dude I got it from couldn't shift it because of the nut width. And that was 24" not 22.5 or whatever this is)

The guitar might be worth a punt if you could see it in the flesh before you buy, but as I said the body looks like it's been bashed about. The last time I saw a guitar with cracks like that was that eBay Jaguar i picked up years ago. Under the finish it was one accidental dropping away from breaking into 3 pieces. I could actually bend the whole thing if i wiggled it by the upper an lower wings.

Rob to the Roe is right in one respect, if you could live with the tiny neck and have the time to fix it you could end up with a great guitar, but if the body is totally fucked then you've ended up paying over the odds for a collection of parts.

*EDIT* I just checked out the pics again and the neck has 2 distinct splits at the end of the headstock too. Some tit has had a case of the Kurdtzs and smashed the shit out of that thing.

jesus fuck, i just enlarged and re-checked the headstock, yeah, thats a huge fucking crack that was repaired with baby shit apparently.
i would pay 350 for it, and re-store it. but thats about it.
and alot of that is just cuz i like the 22.5 scale A width neck.
fuck those pups. fuck that body(it still wouldn't be hard to fix) and fuck that bridge, the plate looks way too shiny.

Thanks for the extra input guys. I'm not going for it, mainly because of the reasons you stated. It's just too much of a risk/cost for something that isn't even entirely true vintage. The smaller 22.5 neck is actually a turn off for me. I didn't realize the scale size at first.

I'd probably still hit it. I love me some ultra short scale action and the headstock damage doesn't affect the tuners. But is it worth $500?

I actually want it but I don't have and wont have the time to fuck with fixing it for the foreseeable future.

Anybody here with the knowledge and experience to fix the thing not tied up and willing to do a good job for a fair price?

there really isn't anything to fix. just play it as is.
if you want to return it to og. then its just a matter of sourcing o.g. parts.
the body is fine, as long as its not falling apart its fine.
i think it would probably be best just to use it for making a template and then making a new body from that. same thing with the neck imo.
im actually rather suspicious of the wear on the back of that thing, seems a bit "forced" to me.

I'm sort of a prissy princess though. The cracks are troubling.

edit: I'm seriously the type of dude that would lose a piece if it fell off, and then I'd be screwed.

the cracks just increase the rock n roll mojo via the kurtz, if you fix them then you lose all of that.
