Custom Jagmaster Project

Post by HNB »

I got these parts from Murph. He was kind enough to give me the bridge too so I have less stuff to fine. This is what is coming my way basically.

My thoughts (since I have lots of pickup options on different guitars) were to put four single pickups in it and use Jaguar switches to turn them on and off. Pretty simple. Then I thought it would be cool to do a series mod on the neck and bridge pairs to make dual or single humbucker mode options. Should be easy enough. I also wanted to have a strangle switch like a jaguar. Makes fuzzs sound cool sometimes. Basically this is the goal at the moment.

I will update as I can. Still working on gathering parts. :)

too many pickups, it hurts my eyes. actually, call me retarded but what if you did this....
grouped them together in almost an HH config, and stuck another 5th one in the middle.
call it the 5th element. without the hot chick, or bruce willis, nor the future non-sense.

But I like the hot chick.

This sort of stuff was sort of my inspiration.

it would be rather cool to find some oversized white singles like that, but thas purely cosmetic. the strat single coils look so damn mundane and ordinary to me, the jaguar pups look like cool hot rod retro, and rob roe covered pups are.... well they are fucking rob roes, you don't fuck with em, they fuck with you.
what is that guitar you posted? reminds me of the framus thread that just popped up.

It is a Teisco. It is kind of like my Kawai, but mine is the three pickup version.

I like the 4 pickup idea, but I think rob is onto something there. Group them into two humbuckers but have each coil switchable. That would still give you 4 pups but would be easier on the eyes.

YES. If not this one than may be another one but that is a great idea. I love it. You could have switches everywhere and i think that looks crazy.

This sounds epic.

It'd be cool to have phasing options too. Like, turning all the pickups on in series and pumping out massive output from strat style pickups. Then swap it to the stratty style percussive twang.
I think that'd be cool.

DiPinto Galaxie 2s used that grouped bucker idea
The Silver Sparkle Galaxie 2 came with two humbuckers and a three way switch. But of course two standard humbuckers would be too normal for DiPinto. In reality, these humbuckers are made up of two single coils each, wired together in series and mounted separately. This allows you to shape their tone by raising or lowering half the pickup. Finding the neck sound a little boomy, I just lowered the half of the pickup closest to the neck and instantly had more focus without the output loss I would expect from lowering the entire pickup.

The more common Galaxie IV had 4 independent singlies with on/offs like your original idea.

To my eyes 4 pickups look too cramped. Maybe do a rotary with a nice chicken head knob instead of all the switches?

Here are the parts that are in so far. (Body, neck, tuners, and bridge.) Custom pickguard from Cooterfinger will be in progress. I sent him a tracing today in the mail. :)

Pictures!

Upon some urging, I have to agree that this has a nice burst. I decided to change plans and keep it sort of more stock looking body and neck wise. New plan is this:

I will do steel wool on the body to satin it up nicely though. :) Seemed like it would be a shame to paint over the flame on the headstock.

How it went down. Steel wool until it was pretty matte. Then I put polishing compound on and let it sit and dry. Once it was dry, I rubbed it off. Went pretty well. :) I like the satin look and it feels really smooth now.

Steel wool.

Pickups came in from Bullock Guitar Pickups! toez10 custom made the set to work with the idea of them being combined in series and also made them higher output. He wound them around 8k but calibrated them for placement in the mock up I showed him. He made it really easy on me by putting tape on each one numbering them 1-4 so I know which goes where. :) Here are pictures with them sitting in the body.
