SG Quandary - NGD bottom of page 2

The SGs with the full pickguard, are they likely to have any exposed routing hidden ? Or would you be able to remove the ugly batwing guard and just have th epalin wooden look.
I've spotted an old Shaftesbury SG on eBay that I quite like the look of except the full guard. Rest of it has been modernised with tuners etc. So should be a safe bet.
My other two options to gaining a SG are make my own "custom" from a kit from that nice Chinese chap Mr Grote. Or feel guilty as hell and spend (finance option that is) on one of those new Loverly 2013 SGJ s , either in chocolate or vintage rubbed.
All options have thier pros and cons,
as to what I want from a SG.

Shaftesbury seller has answered, here is routing for neck pickup, but they can include old smalckguard for no extra. Will have to wait and see how auction foes, if it goes out of my price range then it looks like I will be making my own with the help of Mr Grote.

There is another option though, if you don't want the guard - Gordon Smith SGs can be had with no guard IIRC.

I'm a big fan of the LP style pickguards they were putting on SG deluxes in the early 70's.

Do love a Gordon Smith but I don't think I could afford one of those.
Ideally what I want is an old worn looking possibly walnut 70body, the square block inlays from first fret onwards, binding on the neck and some modern frets. So that Shaftesbury has all this apart from tiny frets. Of course hoping the neck is a thinner fast one. I could possibly live with the full guard but so far I prefer the smaller ones or none at all.
All for under 200 quid

I too prefer the full guard...I can take mine off tonight and let you know if there is any routing under there, I highly doubt there would be. It's a 2012 SG Standard.

I always liked these. The guard is transparent, so you can check the routing.
