Does anybody else think Kurt Cobain worship is annoying?
Let me start off by saying I am a fan of Kurt Cobain. I am a fan of Nirvana. I am a fan of the Mustang, the Jaguar, The SD HB, and the DiMarzio Super Distortion.
They are all fine and well and good.
What irks me is that most off the offset fandom seems to be stuck in their idol-worshipping ways, much in the same way that most Dean Guitar fans are DimeHeads.
It's not a bad thing. Not at all. No disrespect meant to any of the musicians and their gear. It's just I find the lack of originality to be boring.
Fender's even gone the Dean route and begun to market Mr. Cobain's signature gear, so the demand is huge.
Artist models tend to come across to me as a bit desperate and even a little delusional, and when people mod those vintage modified squiers to Cobain-ify them it's sad.
Overwhelmingly, the majority of search results when you youtube "fender/squier mustang" are Cobain modded Stangs played by lanky 14 year old-looking Kurt clones who violently strum along with any track off of Nevermind, and 3 or 4 tracks off In Utero if they're a bit older looking.
It's becoming increasing more difficult for people to look at the mustang/jagstang/jaguar without getting that "Razorback" vibe, especially now that there's a whole new batch of young people who dress, talk, walk, play, and try to be Kurt Cobain.
Once again, no flaming please. I want to know if there's anyone else out there that shares my sentiments, and I'd even like to hear some other opinions. Let's keep it respectful and tasteful. I just think that this is an elephant in the room that needs to be addressed.

I don't mean any disrespect but I find that the grievance against teh kurtz worship is about as tiresome as the worship itself.
One way or another, the entire issue is pretty old hat around these parts. In fact, it should be pretty old hat everywhere, seeing as it's 2013 and all.

Ah... I get ya, I'm still pretty new here. I really don't want to seem redundant or annoying. Sorry if this kind of thread has popped up before.laterallateral wrote:I don't mean any disrespect but I find that the grievance against teh kurtz worship is about as tiresome as the worship itself.

I find it mildly annoying, but no more so than worshipping anyone else. He was a human being who wrote some good songs.
The 'signature guitar' issue is a bit more involved, and makes for a more interesting discussion I think. Why pay (often a higher price) for something that's tailored to one specific player? I'd rather have a guitar that can do more than that, or even better, mod it to do what I personally want!
Off the top of my head I can name one exception to the general 'artist sig model' rule though: the Johnny Marr Jag. I'm not even overly familiar with his playing style or songs, but his sig model jag looks like a really versatile instrument and I'd love to try one; it fixes some of the common complaints tha Jag players often have while maintaining the things that make Jags special.

I also love Cobain since i've heard the first tones of him 1990. Younger kids will discover the nirvana-sounds now or in future and will fall in love with it. I think, it's no problem. I also fell in love with the beatles/hendrix/doors.... many many years after they released their last record. I hope no hippie will be worried about my late love
But never forget to be yourself and not a copy of your stars.
....means i like my jagstang and my strat, but i also like my supersonic, cyclone, and other not-star-owned stuff - and i play my own stuff

I find worship of musicians, actors, athletes, politicians, etc., to be stupid and annoying. People who lack faith in something higher than themselves will make gods of men. It's sad and pathetic.

I own a squier j.mascis jazzmaster and i think, the improvements made to this instrument is worth to pay more. Not the name on the back. I even would have bought it if it where a justin bieber signature jazzmaster. ^^Concretebadger wrote:The 'signature guitar' issue is a bit more involved, and makes for a more interesting discussion I think.
