Grounding problems

Post by wadeaminute »

I just rewired my JR Super-Sonic. It has two humbuckers - a Dimarzio YJM strat-sized 4 wire stack and a a GFS Mini Crunchy (4 wire). I wired it with a volume and tone and a 3-way. And a momentary. It works just fine except for what I assume is a grounding issue. It buzzes / hums when plugged in if I am not touching the strings or any metal parts. If I turn down the volume or tone the buzz goes away. No wires are loose. All wires are in place as per a Seymour Duncan wiring diagram. The ground wire from the cut-off tele bridge goes to the tone pot.

Ideas?

Thanks in advance

Is the bridge grounded? That is the usual problem. check continuity

If it's not what cur said then you have a bad ground somewhere. Can you give us more details on how you wired it? Post a picture of the wiring, or draw a diagram, if you can. DiMarzio wire colors are typically not the same as SD wire colors so there might be something wrong there. I think the GFS is the same though. Does the noise occur in all positions? And is the pickup cavity shielded at all?

If you're like me, the pick guard might need some extra shielding. I am a static filled mother fucker.

Pickguard is shielded.

I used this diagram. The pickup codes were sorted out properly.

SD wiring diagram

I took it to a tech today, and his meter says that I did everything right, grounding wise. He says that this sort of minor hum is normal and no big deal.

I also tried putting a brand new switchcraft jack on the guitar. No change.
