Tell me about phone apps for headphone playing
Not just phone based apps maybe...
What is the most convenient and flexible way to play my guitar through headphones with minimal kit? I'm thinking a phone app type thing but whats the best option in that field? Cheapest? Something that can get some fairly decent amp and pedal models?
Any options to rival phone apps?

I use irig or GarageBand on iPhone/iPad mostly or just plug into my interface & play through ableton on my computer. Most of the time though its iPhone as I can put it in my back pocket.
Other options are those vox headphone amplug things - http://www.voxamps.com/amplug/

Thanks for the tips all, I'm definitely looking for tiny enough to walk about with really. I'd seen the Vox things but I wonder if the direct sound is bit arse or not? I'd be up for some basic effects built in to try and get the sound in the ball park of normal amped sound. Is the whole irig thing a load of fuss and nonsense then?.

They sound really good, very decent amp and speaker sim, and they also do a hilarious little cabinet for it for LOUD PLAYINDave wrote:Thanks for the tips all, I'm definitely looking for tiny enough to walk about with really. They're cool, but none-too flexible.

Agreed. I have the 250 model of this, someone gave it me for nowt. Through headphones it is superb.Doog wrote:I'd just pick up one of those Digitech multi-fx for next-to-nowt; there's always usable sounds on there if you see past the whizzy presets.
If you want to use one on the move it would be easy to screw a belt clip to the back of it, just take one off a 99p Wickes tape measure, load the batteries and off you go.
Wow it even has 30 drum patterns - SOLD. Especially because of the wickes tape clip idea Fran. Yep that does everything I want really. Look like they can be had covered in paint spatter for 25 quid here:

This or similar works for me, either played into my audio interface Hi Z input and direct monitored, or into my Mustang I on the Fender Twin setting.
The Mustang I doesn't take pedals well unless it has the Harley Benton in front of it for some reason (also set to a Clean Fender sound), but with this setup it sounds amazing.
I've never been impressed with the audio DSP work on the iPhone versions of the big amp sims, Garageband on Amy's Mac sounds great - on the iphone - not so much. Not got an adaptor to try the iPad but not really fussed, I have my setup.
Huh, was just looking at the Vox amPlugs and I came across these guys:
Vox amPhones - Active headphones
I think that's a pretty neat idea. Looks like they sell for around $99 USD. They seem to be getting good reviews on Amazon, Sweetwater, and various other places I checked quickly.
