A good friend moved to Atlanta, and left all of his gear behind. He's decided he's not coming back, so he's selling most of his gear. Among his gear he has a 78 MM Bass that i've wanted for a long time.

We came to an agreement on a major bro-price and payment plan.. so in a week or two, it's mine

UPDATE! It's a 78, not a 74. It's got mojo, it needs a cleanup, a new nut, and I haven't had a chance to plug it in. My friend LITERALLY just dropped it off.

Only the look of a shortscale bass makes me want to learn to play bass. How does it differ from playing a full scale bass?

Congrats! Did they come in a natural finish like that originally?

Just what you might expect...frets are easier to reach, strings are closer together. I find them quite comfortable, though I have relatively small hands, and don't have a problem playing a full scale bass.

I don't believe so. My buddy said that he got it from a cokehead salsa player, and IME, it's pretty common for them to strip a guitar to natural, or do crazy refins.

the strings arent really closer together tho...... the nut width on my musicmaster bass neck is wider than my old jazz bass. i wish i could measure them, tho, atm i don't have either near me(about 137 miles away)
but the shorter scale does make it a bit easier to play for the guitar minded players.
I have never enjoyed playing a shortscale bass, im a jazz bass person all the way.
tho that is a sweet looking beast, the natural with black is fastly becoming one of my favs.

NIce. My first instrument was a musicmaster bass. It was an earlier one with the smaller tuners and white guard.
It was stolen years ago. Someday I'll get another.

I suspect yr friend would rather you have it and play the fuck out of it, then some collector who just has it hanging on a wall..
or keeping it and it sits in a case for another decade before being tossed off to a collector who just hangs it on a wall.

Update. At some point this was used by a lefty - there's a strap button hole drilled on the lower horn. It needs a setup and new nut, which I'll get to this weekend. Also, the pots work perfectly. When I plugged it in, and it sounds a bit thin. I expected this since it's got a strat pickup. So far I'm playing it through a loaner Ampeg 25 watt combo, but I'll be looking at getting something bigger in the next few months.

After hearing honeyiscool's demo, and getting music123 to match (and beat by 10%) lacepickupsdirect's price, I settled on a red lace sensor in black. Keeping the current appearance also helped.

I finally got around to installing the pickup. I left the original pots, but I did try out other values. Anyway: WOW... what a difference.

It sounds evil now. Tons of growl... almost Ric'ish.

I had the same pickup in my Comp-stang.

Something about stripped guitars is just gorgeous.
