Stainin raw necks with gun oil

I have 2 maple necks with no finish, and want to tint them. I have heard gun oil works quite well, have read a few threads online, but was wondering if anyone has any tips before I mess them up royally

a lot of guys use tru oil. Fran did on one of his projects... I don't know if it's a "tint" but it's used as an alternative to clear coat

I did my baritone neck with tru oil ( same stuff, effectively). Piece of cake and a lovely finish. Thread here.
