I have been the biggest Jaguar and Jazzmaster fan for a long time, I have had a fender Jaguar since my teens I am 30 in a few weeks and I have to say I can't be arsed with the design anymore.
I haven't setup a Jaguar from scratch since I setup Stewart's Jaguar a few years ago now, and this morning I decided to give mine the once over as it was starting to get a bit clicky and I had changed string gauges too so it was in need.

I started just after 9.30 am at 1pm I was done as I could be(I didn't intonate as I don't have a tuner with me) Everything you adjust knocks something else out of wack my guitar is particularly cuntish as it needs a massive shim to make it work and my bridge has really short (non original) adjusting leg grubs so it is not Ideal. I also set up the mute which is a stupid fucking pointless thing. I finished by making sure the tremolo was adjusted as it was designed so that if I break a string I can rock the button down and keep in tune. But this gives you hardly any travel on the vibrato. Pointless.
I also had some grounding issues as it is old and some grounding points had got a bit corroded, which takes me to the other stupid design of this stupid guitar....wtf the fuck is the point of all those stupid switches ? who uses a strangle switch? pointless! who uses the dark circuit? people who want to sound like they have a blanket over their amp? pointless! The switches themselves are fucking stupid too, lets make things as slow and difficult when we want to change pickups!
Also while I am at it the spongy shit used under the pickups(which have pointless claws on for no reason) why? why use sponge instead of springs used on every other guitar ever? it dries, goes hard and makes the pickups impossible to adjust ever again fuck that shit!

So yes I see it..it's a stupid guitar fuck the Jaguar in the A HOLE!

Also I realise that floyd rose trems are difficult too blah blah blah....but the jaguar is a cunt more!

I will do you a massive favour in taking it off your hands if you like.

buy a PRS if you want a guitar that is easy to play and sounds good pussy.

The neck pup and the tremolo tone make it worth it.

If you still are using a stock style bridge, you deserve it.

I want all my guitars to sound good pussy.

mine is fucking perfect. i even busted the nut on the low E and it still works great, doesn't pop out....its like the guitar could give a fuck that the little piece of plastic is missing

i seriously don't understand the thing about the bridge. mine works fine. strings don't go flying about, it doesn't rattle or buzz anymore than any other old jaguar. ITS SUPPOSED TO, ITS AN OLD JAGUAR, THATS WHAT IT SOUNDS LIKE.


the strings are so big on mine that the reverb handle is rendered useless because the arm is bent so far forward it not only hits the strings, but scrapes the body of the guitar. hahahah

Pull yourself together Hurbert before I find myself partially agreeing with Rob out loud.

That said, it struck me a while back that the reason a Jag may be more fiddly to set up is due to the short scale: the sweet spot for intonation/tuning is always going to be that much smaller. And it'll be that much easier to knock out of whack. Conversely, baritones are a fucking joy to set up because their very longness makes them so forgiving and easy.

Secondly, the rhythm circuit is a gift to anyone using octave fuzzes (you know, like you nominated as your favourite pedal you own the other day...) - set it with the tone rolled down and you can lure high octave sounds out at the flick of a switch rather than having to flick a switch and roll off your tone. Think of the time you'll save.

Thirdly, I didn't realise you had a bobbins bridge on it without adjustment. PM me your address and I'll send you the bridge off my AVRI - not using it (SINCE I FITTED MY FUCKING MASTERY ) so you can have it on very long term loan. How's that?

Really? Can you not adjust the trem spring tension screw enough to make it work?

BTW I have a Staytrem bridge on my VM Jaguar now.

Man up - Hurb - we all have frustrating days but these are grand old things.

I think that all classic electric guitar designs have defects. All solid and semi-hollow Gibsons(and Gibson style guitars) have back angled mahogany necks with back angled headstocks, design that yelling throw me to the floor or carry me in a soft gigbag. ES, Flying V and especially SG have short neck to body glued-in joint which craving to be pushed hard. Hollow body Rickenbackers have weak neck joint as well and weak headstock design with an enormous seizure for adjusting two trussrods. P90 equipped guitars has either the same foam to adjust height of the pickup either nothing. Gibson wraparound bridges are impossible to intonate exactly. Mustangs as I understood have problems with tremolo and tunning stability. Fender "tune-o-matic" style bridges are far from being perfect. Despite all this thousands of people want to play nothing but guitars of classic design.
The most sturdy and simple guitar design is Tele, IMHO. The most comfortable and durable(at the same time) guitar that I've played is Stratocaster, but... I don't want to own Stratocaster as my main guitar.

I agree with above poster. Telecaster seems to be rock solid. If you get one with jumbo frets its super tits to play. Plus there are a bazillion techs that can setup your tele. Only and handful that know how to massage a jaguar the right way.

Maybe you just had the bad luck to happen on a dud? Some guitars are an absolute PITA to set up, right from the factory; others are fine. My JM is pretty stable tuning-wise, which surprised me.

I just don't know whether your issue is with Jags in general, or whether it's *that particular jag* that's a wall-hanger. I've never owned or played one, but it sounds like you're simply not a Jag man. Which is a very different thing from saying there's something wrong with Jags, or your maintenance skills btw. If I could afford it I might make an offer, because I've always wanted to try one out. And no, I really can't. I'm moving next weekend, and have the circuitry of an Epi Sheraton to sort out yet.

If you want to see how awkward and frustrating it can be to work on an electric guitar, try the internals of a semi-hollow!

Have to agree with this.

I still love the Jag despite all its faults but i have to be in the mood for mine these days.

I seriously loved having both my Telecaster Deluxe and Baja Telecaster and they were a complete dream to play and look after.

Didn't stop me hankering after a Jaguar though, I'm just wired that way.

Playing a jaguar is like driving an old car. You have to take a little more care for it.
