Neck Radius

Post by serfx »

so Finboy hooked me up with a squier mustang neck..
first thing i did was pull the fret wire out..
now I'm wondering if it is at all possible to make this a 7.25 radius neck before i replace the fret wire with a more vintage low ..
i just don't get along w/ medium jumbo frets, or 9.5 radius

i'm also thinking of making the neck a soft V instead of this baseball C they have..

so.. before I actually do anything, who has some "pro tips"?

Can't see why not Jim - a simple 7.25 radius sanding block will do the trick. You'll need to deepen the fret slots again I expect.

indeed, deepen the fret slots. and DO NOT DIG! what i mean is, even pressure the entire time, and try like hell to stay in the center, it would be wise to mark like 3 marks running length wise from but to nut(hhshshshahahaha) and watch as they disappear as you sand. I would actually use really good 160 grit paper to start, and as you get near the end switch over to 220 or even finer. o, and remember to take the nut out(hahaha) nice even strokes, remember that.

nut is already out..
these fret wire holes are pretty deep, but I suspect that you're right i will need to cut them a bit deeper, but i'll wait till after i've radiused the neck to do so.. and acquired the new fret wire..
I'll also need a new nut for it, as I may end up using this one on my jag-stang neck, as the one it has is broken..
so.....
where would i find a radius sanding block?
I searched on stewmac last night, mind at 4AM while half asleep and 1/4 cut after playing a gig..
so it is probably on there...

i like the idea about the pencil lines.. totally gonna have to rock that out...

as for bound and blocked..
i think i'll dibs out..

though maybe bound.. not sure what that all requires to be honest..
keep the dots..
the DOTS
get it?
no
whatever...

Bound & DOTS..
come on..
fuck.

Anyways...
Finboy had already sanded down the headstock.. we were gonna test spray a colour or two with it.. but turns out the blue i thought I had was actually more a brostang green..
memories are strange like that sometimes..
not sure if I'll decal the thing when I'm done with it.. probably not, as it's not a fender neck, and when I'm finiahed it won't be a squier neck either..

stew mac should have the radius block you seek! do you already have a fret press? how are you planning on re-fretting it?

When you sand do long strokes in one direction. If you go back and forth, you end up hitting the ends twice as much and dishing it out. It's a small thing but it will mess with the setup and require the truss rod to work harder because if you do dish it out, you'll have to over compensate by tightening the truss rod.

i'm gonna be ordering a fret press as well, since I don't currently have one..
might just get the fret kit they have..
because if this pans out.. well I won't be afraid of buying a 9.5 neck anymore.. as i'll be able to change that.

Thanks for the tip! That is what i was thinking as well, so its good to know that my brain was on the right track.

sadly shipping to canada on all those is $53+
also, they won't sell just a single 7.25r block..
but I appreciate the suggestion.

This is what I was lead to believe.
headstock was sanded off before I got it..
you'll have to check with Finboy for specific details.
