How original is this Mustang?

I saw this on CL and the seller claims it's a 60s Mustang.

The neck plate and tuners are 70s
The neck looks to be a 22.5" scale with the smaller headstock. (Possible Duo Sonic)

That is gorgeous. It's 1960s.

I would be reluctant to paint it because the neck matches the body so well. I hate to quibble over filthy lucre, but he's got it priced just over what most people would snatch up quickly.

What's going on with the pickguard?

Looks like aged/stained pearloid that is scuffed up.

The pickguard looks as though it was routed for slanted HBs and then patched. It's probably just shadows, but it's weird.

Some Mustangs had 22.5" scale necks, but they had the larger headstock and different Fender sticker.

I'm pretty sure all my 22.5" vintage Fender headstocks are of pretty similar size. Lemme check.

Nope, you're right the Mustang headstock is larger than the Duo or Musicmaster's.

edit: My Mustang and Musicmaster are both 1964's for reference.

Yeah, that's a '59-'64 Duo/MM neck. $950 seems a bit much to me. I'd do $500. That is, if I had $500.

Yup - it's a total partscaster. Non-stock knobs, stripped paint on a 60s era slab body, neck plate and F-tuners from the 70s as you already know. The neck is definitely an older (pre-August '64 / Mustang era) 22.5" scale 21 fret Duo Sonic or Musicmaster neck. It kind of looks like someone tried to scratch the model name off the headstock decal. Mustangs had 22.5" necks as an option, but that one wasn't a stock neck for that guitar body. The good news is that it should work just fine. The pickups and switches look stock, although I do see those shadows or marks that Steve mentioned on the pickguard - that does look strange. As far as the color of the pickguard, it looks like it's yellowed with age and had an area that has been scratched free of that due to play / pick wear. I can't tell if that's natural or simulated from here based on those pics, but it seems pretty believable.

I agree with the guys who are saying $500. I probably would grant it that for the sake of the parts and mojo, although I'm not really a fan of the 22.5" necks. It does look interesting though, and it definitely has a certain je ne sais quoi, but not $950 worth IMO.
