hi guys uh (idrk how forums work so if i sound like a nerd thats bc i am one) well uh ive been wanting a jazzmaster for like a long time (and ik its not short scale but it seems to me u guys are totes cool w that? my friend told me u guys were cool pls be cool) and like ive tried some jaguars around and i didnt hate the sound but i thought it was a bit thick, and like one day i wanted to play j mascis' signature jm like kinda ironically and i was like "shit" but yeah thats way beyond the point thing is im broke!! and i wanna build the thing myself like part for the experience part for the uh pride really. and like ive heard of people that can sell me some parts cheap like jm pickups like 30$ each shipping worldwide and custom selected pickguards same thing but, overall, how much would it cost me to buy either online or from some of my certified fender dealers, a plain body (with holes and everything), mustang bridge, pickguard, pickups, neck (rosewood w white bindings), 3 bolt neck plate, floating tremolo locking bridge plate (i think thats what it's called idk), locking tuning machines and uh (counting on fingers) a selector switch? i think thats about it? i dont need like a calculation of the costs just an overall from like either experience or like idk just general knowledge (idk working for fender or like having bought most of those things throughout ur life) like just about where would i be sitting? 1200 dollars?? 2400?? 557 000?????? and by the way i live in italy so theres shipping and idk. also is there anything missing in my list? aside from painting service and stuff ofc. sorry i made this a bit long and kinda hard 2 understand yeah thnx 4 readin have a nice day 8)

you would end up spending more, unless you found everything for incredibly cheap. like a neck for 100 bucks, body for 100, pg for 15, pups 60 for the pair, then a cheap bridge, trem etc. it would just be a better idea to wait around for a cheap used one, the japanese ones used to sell for 500-600 usd all day long on ebay, but those days are long gone. you may be better off waiting around for a CP (classic player) to show up for cheap.

Honestly, just sourcing a bound JM neck from Mighty Mite USCG or Allparts is going to put your build costs at around the price of a new factory Jazzmaster.
The locking tuners are going to drive your build costs up as well... All and all, you should be able to get away with your build for 600-700 bucks but if you're willing to forgo the bound neck and locking tuners, you could get a VM Jazzmater, put an AVRI trem and a Wikinson bridge on it and be golden of under $400... Just a thought.

You might be able to put one together for $600 or so if you wait around for good deals.

But you won't get close to beating the value of a Squier JM. It's by far your best bet unless you're spending a lot of money, and even then possibly still so.

I built a partsmaster for around £300, everything was 2nd hand except the wiring. I had to be patient & wait for good quality parts.

Fender Blacktops, Squiers & CP's can be had cheap secondhand.

it may be wise(if everything works out right) to get a cheap second hand blacktop or cp, sell off the parts you don't want to fund the parts you do want.
i.e. neck, pickups, and vibrato unit.

Even if you could get the parts cheap enough, a lot of sellers won't ship to Italy as a lot of stuff goes missing before getting to the buyer, I don't know why.

nick is right, italy is notorious for shitty shipping and weird package delays, blah blah blah.

just buy a jazzmaster. the tremolos are better than mustangs and you honestly don't need locking tuners or a 3 bolt neck plate

yes, doing what you are proposing will be too expensive and probably doomed to failure, and it will have terrible resale value

I think your best bet is a Squier Jazzer, and carrying out whatever mods you want on one of those. Good luck and let us know what you decide on!

alex listen to these guys, they know their shit. literally just get like a squier jmjm and upgrade the tremolo and bridge and if you want, pickguard. getting a bound neck is gonna be a bitch, dude.

i'm the mentioned friend, btw, i told him that he's better off here than *amber*

ay so most of u guys said like around $600 - $700 and i mean, how is that not cheap???????? how much are jazzmasters where you live lmao im lucky if i find a squier for less than 1800 euros here!! and btw i made a mistake i thought those were called locking tuners but theyre actually vintage style lol nvm that. and like yeah i dont NEED bindings or a 3 bold neck plate but fuck those are sexy alreit. and like yeah i dont mean to buy all that at once, im never gonna have the money to spend like that, im thinking of buying like, each part by month, saving some every month to buy the next part. most of the principal stuff is probably gonna be easy to find (like body, neck, pickguard, pickups) and for the rest, like, i know this r e a l l y good fender dealer guy, a bit rude but he's got whatever u need, i could even trust him for the neck if i wanted. he's probably gonna be able to fix me to the tremolo part thing, mustang bridge, knobs neck plate tuners e t c e t e r a. and like really if it doesnt surpass 1200 dollars overall im like p satisfied???? fuck!!!!

btw i was thinking of building something like this!!!
Image

(i hope this works)
and i might opt for white pickups but idk, anyway the main point of building it myself is like, the pride really like, I BUILT THIS THING, ITS GOT MASKING TAPE OVER EVERY SQUARE INCH BUT ITS HERE AND I DID IT

also thanks a lot every one for the replies v informative!! i'll keep u updated when i start the project thing (im probably gonna wait till like march 2014 like im jobhunting so i can save for a new strat and yeah idk thanks 8) )

I get that the idea of building one up on the cheap is a nice idea, and I know people that have done a similar type of thing, but personally i'd just go the easy route. Get a Squier and upgrade anon. You'll have a great guitar that you can play straight of the bat.

Guess if you've got a guitar that you're happy with just now then it not a big deal to wait around for the right bits n bobs to come up

If that were true, everyone would be going to Italy to sell their Squiers and make big money.
