my big muff's been sounding way more muddy than it used to through my hot rod deluxe and the eq doesn't seem to do much to make it sound any better. I've been considering selling the amp to fund something else.

so should I sell the HRD and put it towards another amp? or should I try a different pedal?
any suggestions on good tube amps I could find in the 400/600 dollar range or a good big muffy pedal that sounds a little better with open chords?

$400-600 is a sweet spot for amps. there are a lot of options.

The deluxe is gonna be the 1x12 version.


You might try a different cab or something and trying that out, but the 400-600 range is the sweet spot for amps.

the 1x12 is the problem with that amp, but like everyone says, you have a lot of nice options in the $400-600 range, like this:

but browsing eBay and cl I'm seeing a lot of options in that range to work with. also have seen that silverface fenders have gone up a little bit. which is what I was kinda looking for.

i have an old ampeg 2x10 ss70c solid state amp. its easily the best solid state combo i have ever had, or actually, ever even tried out. the revereb was voted the best by groove tube magazine years ago.

Yeah, new speaker could be exactly what you need. Celestions are always going to be a standard go-to speaker for any upgrade, but have a good look at Eminence as well. Some of their speakers are brilliantly tailored toward different types of music.

actually leaning more towards a speaker change. where should I start with speakers? I played a blues jr with a Jensen and really like the sound. but what about eminence or celestion? also what's the difference between alnico and ceramic? don't really know where to start.

but I'm thinking the stock speakers are just shitty, the HRDs with the jensens sounded nice. my amp just sounds dull and muddy. or really really ice picky. especially at high volumes. at low volumes it's not as terrible.

slap a weber or jensen if you want a FENDER sound

Not totally sure on the alnico vs ceramic bit, but using a 15" extension with a 12" isn't a problem as long as your ohms are right.

I think he is asking if it will physically fit in the cab, which i don't know without measuring. You could look into avatar cabs or something like that.

Oh. Then no. Most combos don't really make the proper space allowance for the speaker(s) anyway, so almost definitely not.

I put an EV speaker in my Rivera, it made it heavier to carry but it sounds incredible. I'd definitely recommend one of those.

Definitely gonna check all that shit out. Getting really tired of the way this amp sounds live or at practice. And I think weber makes cabinets that fit a 15 that looks like an hrd. Might have to give one a go. They also make them that have space cut for a chassis. So maybe put the chassis in one of those and make it a 1X15 tweed hrd? Would that sound good? Ultimately I think a speaker change will help. The amp just doesn't sound very fendery if that makes sense.

Get a Jensen neodymium speaker. It will sound fenders and your amp will be super lightweight.

that sounds awesome. fender tonez and not backbreaking. my amps heavy as fuck. am I looking at around 100 bucks here? probably could upgrade it before Xmas. also installation: I read I have to drain the filter caps so I don't die. is that true? or is it just as simple as just unsoldering the speaker and slapping in a new one? I also read I have to remove the chassis as well?

If you're removing the chassis and you're not familiar with the insides of high voltage thingies, leave it powered off overnight for safety. Or make sure you touch only the chassis.
