Modding a Squier Duo-Sonic

A few years ago I was looking to buy a Squier Duo-Sonic, but for various reasons (the awful color scheme, my dislike for the pickguard and the fact that I bought a Pawn shop series mustang) I never did.
Now however I live in Japan and things are a bit different. First of all here the Duo-Sonic comes in five different colors , and second it only costs half of what it cost back in Sweden.
So no need for refinishing+cheaper price makes it feel like a project I could manage even with somewhat limited financial resources.
The plan is to turn into a Duo-Sonic II i.e mustang controlplate/pickguard and possibly a different bridge.
Does this sound like a do-able project? Is the Duo-Sonic routed like a mustang (so that I can just slip on the mustang controlplate/pickguard without any gaps)? I know the switching is different, but it feels more solve-able than re-routing.
The plan is Daphne blue with a white pearloid pickguard and black pupcovers. I think it will look great with the maple neck.
