Some 'Work In Progress' Songs...

On my course at university a lot of people choose to write and record an EP/album either instead of or as well as a dissertation. I'm doing this, although I haven't yet decided whether or not to write a dissertation too (which would mean dropping one of my other modules). The working title of the album/EP/whatever/thing is 'People Are Awful (Seller's Remorse)'.

I haven't recorded any fully polished versions of songs yet, but I'm in the process of writing new songs, and going through old unused songs (several of which have turned out to be much better than I remembered!). I'm recording demos of all the songs I decide to use, partly so I can show them to people and get some constructive critique, and partly just to show to my drummer chap (I'm planning on playing pretty much all the instruments on the final recordings, apart from drums because I'm a mediocre drummer - the drums on these demos are all programmed). So far I've decided on six songs and I've managed to record demos of four of them.

YOU CAN HEAR ALL THE DEMOS SO FAR ON SOUNDCLOUD HERE CLICK ON THIS LINK PLEASE AND THEN YOU'LL BE ABLE TO HEAR EVERYTHING HOORAY LET'S ALL HAVE A GOOD TIME!

So, what do you guys think?

at 9:45 i'd bring in some feedback..9:54 i'd hit a really distorted chord on guitar and let it ring back into feedback at 10:10..the same as what the bass is playing..I guess that's a bass playing the main part right? At 10:10 i'd leave everything else the same but i'd probably have at least one guitar in a high octave playing fast and maybe some trem picking..If it were for real then i'd be pushing you to lose control on the last go around. It sounds like you step everything up towards the end but, for me, i want more. I want to believe that you're afraid. The distortion on the vocals is excellent but push harder at the end esp the last time you sing it. Microphone distortion would fit as well..maybe knock the mic over..It's good man. You don't have to do any of this and it's still great but if i were asked to do something then that's all i would try different and then see how it sounds. It may make it worse. It's good though. WELL DONE. I HAD FUN!

No, no, you didn't offend me at all! I've just barely been on ShortScale today.

Thanks for the feedback, I'm glad you enjoyed it all. At the moment there's literally about 6 bass tracks and no guitars on the song you mentioned specifically. Might consider having some guitars in the final, polished version...

Okay, so despite having just commented on the NOSE video, I also want to comment on this material and say it's also great. My immediate first impression was the guitars have this incredible, like, Melvins thing happening, but I can't quantify that statement with anything beyond intangible feelings.

If you presented these demos as a finished EP I would feel it works quite well as-is. Whether or not it's even remotely close to where you want it to be is, I suppose, a completely different issue.

I can kind of see what you mean about the Melvins thing, although I'm not sure exactly what it is either, haha. I'm showing these demos to my songwriting tutor on Tuesday, so hopefully he'll be as impressed as you guys!
