I'm going to be looking into doing it. Any tips? The amp itself is around 45lbs/20kg

Take amp to UPS
Tell them where you want it shipped.
Let them do everything else.

if you want to estimate shipping cost: do the same thing, but now you have it in the box ready to go and have the exact weight and dimensions. find the furthest distance you are willing to ship and set a flat rate based on that price (add a few bucks just in case). Make sure you take pictures for your ebay listing before they box it up (duh). get any/all angles. If there are tubes, you may want to remove the tubes and ship them separately - i have gotten amps shipped with tubes in and it all ok, but you never know.

get insurance if you can. it works.

Remove all the valves, wrap them individually, and label them clearly where they came from. Bubblewrap the amp, put it in a box, then put that box into a bigger box with bubblewrap/crushed paper in the gap between the boxes.

For bonus points, actually remember to put the individually wrapped valves somewhere in the package as well, instead of finding them on the table when you've finished wrapping.

Thirdly, to prevent any damage, let the buyer know roughly where in the package the valves are.

EDIT: just spotted that I was typing this post at the same time as Sloan posted his, so hadn't read it. I like his version too.

Thanks for the input, guys. Anyone know how much more UPS charges when they do the packaging versus when you do it yourself? Trying to go down the path of least resistance here but it seems daunting either way :?

I have always liked the double box/double bubble wrap method, but do it yourself so you know its done they way you'd like to recieve one. Relying on a 3rd party is risky since they really dont have any skin in the game. You might get a couple real good UPS guys to do a great job, then WHAM.... some joker throws your Tremolux in a flimsy chinese cardboard box and cuts het loose. Your guy on the other end now has some really nice parts. NOT FUN.

^if you get UPS to do it, then all blame goes to them. you effectively remove yourself from any wrongdoing if something does happen.

Good to know. I'll probably end up doing it myself. I'd like to limit any and all interactions I could have because this process will already be somewhat of a pain. Again, thanks guys :D
