SHAD'S FIRST PEDAL PROJECT

Post by theshadowofseattle »

I ordered a Behringer VD-1 Muff clone, not so much because I need another muff, but because I need an enclosure for a Fuzz Face circuit. I figure there's room enough for both in there.

1. Is the input-output situation for combining the two really as simple as wiring what would be attached to the input jack for the Muff to the wires that would be attached to the output jack of the Face?

2. Is there anything cool a first-time modifier could do to the VD-1 circuit to enhance the kool sonds or is it best to leave it alone?

3. What is the font for the controls? I want the Fuzz Face section controls to be something rad. Ideally, GRAVITY and SHADOW.

the behringer is all smd so i imagine you cant do much to modify it (not that it needs to, i like the way it sounds, except for the fucking bypass)

This is the exact same as my Fuzz Face guts. I see that one of the jacks has an extra ring. DO I NEED THAT or can I use a regularassaintgotnoextra ring jack?

And honestly, for connecting the two circuits, if I gotta run a patch cord around the side of the pedal looking all janky to connect to itself then idgaf.

Found a rocking GUT SHOT of the Fuzz Face, so I can clearly see where them JACKWIRES go.

I'm gonna just have two HILARIOUS sets of jacks on the pedal.

I'm no pedal wizard but I'm pretty sure that third ring is for connecting the battery so it doesn't drain unplugged.

put three switches in there just to be an asshole

one for the fuzz face, one for the big muff, and one to bypass both of them

Typically a jack is SLEEVE - ground and TIP - signal.

RING is used to connect something to GROUND only when a jack is inserted since mono jack into stereo socket = RING & SLEEVE connected

So typically what happens is you wire the battery snap to the DC jack which has it's own switching to disable the battery snap if a DC lead is involved and then you wire that GROUND to the RING and the circuit, LED etc off the SLEEVE. So nothing happens if no jack is present.

If you're ditching battery power and going DC only (you may need to in order to have space) you want to just connect everything to the SLEEVE connection of the jack(s) - DC jack, circuit, footswitches - any ground connection.

In terms of daisy chaining your pedals, I would do it via separate footswitches.

You want to do this:

INPUT jack -> input lug on footswitch for pedal 1
output lug for footswitch for pedal 1 -> input lug on footswitch for pedal2
output lug for footswitch for pedal2 -> OUTPUT jack

Is your fuzzface positive ground? I.e. Germanium? If so you can't share power supply or ground connections as they'll ground each other out - this project might be DOA if so.

I'm planning on powering them with two power supplies, or maybe one with a battery, but def not both. If they're connected with the lug/jack thing you outlined, they still need separate power, right?

That's the plan!

Looking at the VD-1 guts is intimidating since everything is SECRET GOVERNMENT NANOTECHNOLOGY. Is this even worth fucking with?:

ARE THOSE JACKS EVEN REAL?

It's the Dunlop big honkin' red one circa 2005, pretty sure it's silicon (not my favorite metalloid, but it'll do).

I had a feeling that's what you were doing for power but didn't want to assume anything.

You might be wanting one of these

As long as they both use neg ground you can use the same power supply/plug and jack to power them . Fuzzes don't take much power at all

However that SMDboard on the VD looks a pain

Jacks are soldered to the board meaning to use them in the double pedal you'll need to slice across the tracks on the PCB to break them and do some tack soldering to hack into both the jacks and the foot switch for your new configuration

Not impossible but also not that pleasant

Jesus I forgot how shit that foot switch is on the behringer

You'll need two new 3PDTs for this

I can wk you through this in detail if you still want to do it and can get me decent macro shots of the boards front and back

Whoa, really? Like, as an absolute necessity for this to work? I've never fucked with pedals before, and I'm a bit intimidated.

I think the main thing here is to find the ins and outs. I pulled one of those behringer VDs apart, and I was like, "I've made a huge mistake."
I would leave that alone as much as possible. A new switch is a good idea, though.

I'm just gonna ghetto loop it. Drill holes for the fuzz face jacks on the side and just use a patch cord.

yeah, the bypass on the behringer is literally the worst. i found out that putting a buffered pedal in front of it actually fixed the problem.
