1. Squier John 5 Telecaster
2. Squier VM Telecaster Custom with Squier Affinity Tele neck
3. MIK Fender Lite Ash Tele with MIM Tele neck
4. Squier Affinity Tele

Here's a close up of the top 3.

The John 5 is incredible, a really great playing and sounding guitar totally stock. The neck is thin for a tele. The neck humbucker is alnico and the bridge is ceramic. The relocated toggle switch was a genius move on Mr. 5's part. It's not very heavy as far as tele bodies go, and there's no cutaway for the sensitive underbellies of TOTAL PUSSIES.

If you look closely at the neck heel of the VM Tele Custom, you'll see that it has been poorly cut out for a 22 fret neck. I tried putting the Lite Ash neck on it, but that neck was complete garbage, so I put the neck off of an Affinity Tele that Mama Shad got me on it. Now it plays really, really well. The saddles are cranked way back because I tune that one in Eb. The stock humbuckers are crazy good. PAF-type tones, almost piano-like with thicker strings. I had 11's on it, but went back to my usual 10's with a wound 3rd. I'd highly recommend these even though Squier is making the Tele Deluxes now, the pickups are that good. I replaced the switch at some point and put a football plate on instead of the derpomatic electrosocket.

Body is really light for a tele. I don't think it's basswood. It's Agathis or something.

Tried to buy a new pickguard, but the dude sent the p90 one so I've got to return it.

The Lite Ash tele has been my main guitar for years, right up until I got the John 5 and then built the Shadowmaster.

Just this morning I put a new BWB guard and a control plate off a CV tele on! The old 1 ply was cut for the 22 fret neck it came with and the control plate was oversized, so it didn't fit with normal pickguards. Also the 1 ply original guard had trenches dug in by robroe's picking technique and his Allparts inch-thick picks. The neck pickup is the stock Seymour Duncan alnico whatever deal. Even though it's wired up properly, it buzzes like touching the ground on the cable when you touch the metal cover on the neck pickup. I haven't tried to fix that because it's fun for MORELLOLZ Testify-type noises. The bridge pickup is a GFS rails thing, and the pots are both GFS 500k. I can't stress enough how much I love this guitar. The sondz are twangier and ballsier than most stock Fenders I've played. The bridge rails is a bit more microphonic than GFS lets on in their ENOUGH WAX TO MAKE A CANDLE claim, but it's not bad at all.

Most Squier Affinity Teles have a smaller, odd body shape. It's really noticeable on the upper horn. For comparison, here's Mama Shad's tele compared to Lite Ash and the Affinity I bought yesterday. The one I just got in black is the EXACT same shape as the Lite Ash, but I think it might actually be thicker. The edges are a bit pointier than the MIK, which has them rounded off somewhat. The blue affinity is thinner, weighs considerably less, and feels much cheaper. The rosewood neck is much thicker and more baseball batty than the maple neck Mama Shad's tele came with, but I don't mind a thicker neck. The rosewood doesn't look cheap, but the inlays kinda do. The stock electronics on the black one are also better, but I'll probably swap it all out eventually. You can hear every little thing through the pickups because they're super microphonic, so noises like the body bumping against you are audible through the amp. Definitely not fun through overdrives unless you're after feedback or want to eschew using a mic and PA to sing and play at the same time.

Note! The knobs on the black affinity are proper Shadow knobs with the dome top, where the blue affinity's knobs are all flat. Flat looks and feels cheaper, imo.

One day I will have a collection of SGs in fifty different configurations, just like Shad's Teles. I can feel it.
